An out-of-control wildfire fuelled by strong, gusty winds in Brazeau County has forced an evacuation order for area residents.

A fast-moving brush fire blackened dozens of open acres Wednesday in the remote reaches of southern San Diego County, just north of the Mexican border.

The sight of a dozen firefighters in full gear dousing a dry, grassy hillside Wednesday morning looked a little incongruous, but according to Cal Fire-Butte County officials, it was necessary.

The fire erupted Monday and the visitor center has been closed, tours have been canceled, and power and phone service is out.
