I wonder why this goat owner had a guard llama in with his goats, yet did not use normal precautions when approaching the goats.
It is a well know fact among llama owners, goat owner, cattle owners, alpaca owners that a Llama will guard his charges to the death.
They are usually gentle, but if approached by what seems to be two people perceived as a threat to the goats in this story, a good guard llama will attack.
My guard llama a seven year old gelded male Named Rusty (and I bet this spanky was gelded to be a guard) would run to the Alpaca pasture fence and try to attack any dog that came close. I sold him to an alpaca buyer who had no guard dogs at the time.
Several passer by curiosity seekers have complained that Rusty spit at them. Yes, he spit when they came close to the fence. I daresay that if they come over the fence, they would get the same treatment that the stupid goat owner in this story got.

I agree w/ Bagley, if you are using a llama as a guard, then take precautions when your dealing w/ what it is suppose to be guarding. You can't have a guard, and also have a "pet" as the wife said. The llama is better off having been shot, one less stupid owner to deal with.

I think this story is a total crock. Llamas only have bottom teeth in the front. There is no way a llama could bite someone so hard to cause 700 stiches. Even if they still had their fighting teeth which are usually removed when gelded they couldn't bite you the bad. That's like saying a slug bite you.

I hate to hear of any human being injured, but it does sound as though the guard llama was doing his job. I fear the knee jerk reaction was to kill the llama when he probably deserved the 2009 Guard Llama of the Year award instead. I've handled a lot of llamas and never had any incidents remotely resembling an attack. I address this somewhat at www.northtexasllamas.com
