A massive storm front swept north through the central United States on Sunday, hammering the region with fist-sized hail, blinding rain and tornadoes, including a half-mile wide twister that struck near Oklahoma City.

A tornado of rare power roared through an Oklahoma City suburb, killing at least 51, flattening neighborhoods with winds up to 200 mph and destroying at least one school.

The violent tornado outbreaks of the past several days, including the killer twister that hit Moore, Okla., on Monday, have shattered the calm of what had been a very quiet tornado season so far.

A large tornado was spotted near Wichita Mid-Continent Airport shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday as part of a fast-moving storm, according to the National Weather Service.

A large "violent and extremely dangerous" tornado was spotted on the southwest side of Wichita, Kansas, moving northeast at about 30 miles per hour, the National Weather Service said.

Authorities say a tornado has touched down in Wichita, Kan., but emergency officials say there are no injuries or fatalities.

Sunday evening, the National Weather Service placed the Shawnee County area and much of the northeastern part of the state in a severe weather warning.
