Catholics 'ignore rules on sex'

Most practising Catholics ignore the church's teaching on contraception and more than half think it should be revised, a survey has suggested.

Whether most Catholics ignore the church's teaching on contraception or not, does not make the use of contraception ok in the eyes of the church. The Catholic Church, is not a democracy, that establishes a truth based on polling and statistics. It bases it's teaching on what Christ Himself proclaimed to be the truth. If everyone on earth, except the pope, thought that contraception is not a sin, it doesn't change the act from being sinful. Contraception is a sin of SELFISHNESS. Most of the world today, revolves around getting the almighty orgasm. Most forms of contraception leads to the destruction of a human life - the fertilized zygote ( a child). Also, have you noticed how society has developed since the advent of the sexual revolution and contraception? There is no more respect between men and women, manners went out the window, pornography on the rampage, maybe 1 billion children throughout the world killed in abortions since the 1970s, 1 in every 2 marriages ends in divorce, adultery and every kind of sick sexual act on the increase and a world saturated with violence, loneliness and depression , that gets worse as we continue into the future.
Whether you believe that the use of contraception is not a mortal sin or not, is your choice. Your belief doesn't matter or change a truth into a falsehood or vice versa. The authority of the church (pope) has been granted the power and the right to determine and interpret truth by the power of the Holy Spirit (God Himself). The acceptance of these teachings is what is called FAITH and faith, is a gift from God. MAY GOD GRANT YOU FAITH AND MAY YOU UPHOLD AND LIVE BY IT.:-)

The last post clearly shows that like the Catholic Church he has not evolved. The Zygote, as he puts it cannot be fertilised as that's exactly what contraception prevents. I hope that in order not be a hypocrit that this person never seeks medical intervention of any other kind to extend his/her life or improve their health

so quote the Bible verse that says, "Thou shalt not use contraception."

Typical cafeteria christianity where they only choose to follow the rules which do not affect them and then go around condemning everyone else.

I think undemocratic religions are a real danger to the U.S. democracy. People cannot live in a democracy and an autocracy at the same time without one or the other being affected. I don't think people should get used to living under the thumb of an authoritarian religion, and obviously a lot of catholics think the same way. There is a limit to how much of their private lives people will give over to an organization even one promising a heaven and threatening with a sadistic hell.

Is Michael talking about the 'morning after' pill? Birth control prevents fertilization- wonder how many kids he has- LOL !!! Since when are violence, loneliness and depression directly linked to the sexual revolution? Way off base with this one. Give a good argument- there are plenty out there...Sounds like a person's isolated bad experience changes his perspectives on what is real and what is not....

I wonder how many children the Pope would want to support, if Catholic couples followed the contraception ban imposed on the faithful. Whoever determined that sex was instituted strictly for procreation had to either be impotent or a member of the clergy. Were there no means to prevent pregnancy, we'd be up to our eyeballs in offspring. In centuries past, famines, droughts, plagues and wars kept populations in check. Denying Communion to those who are pro-abortion is a draconian measure.

Agree! Contraception is medical intervention to prevent fertilization. Look at how many people would not exist without medical intervention. Diabetics use insulin to prevent coma, organ failure, etc. Cancer patients use chemotherapy to prevent death.

I guess sex after menapause is a big NO NO. Menapause is nature's contraceptive saying your too old for sex.*Men have it made*

If contraception is used, then there is NO kid to kill. Nothing, nada, no fertilized egg just as if you had sex when the woman was in the part of her cycle where she wasn't fertile. SO, if a man and woman have sex KNOWING that the woman will not get pregnant because she is in the infertile stage of her cycle, is that bad? I mean, it's contraception of sorts. What if a man doesn't finish where he started and there is no sperm to fertilize the egg. That is contraception of sorts? Is that a no no?
In all of these examples it would appear you are saying you kill an inconvenient kid? Then I guess you only have sex with the intent to have children...I guess you better get all you can get before menapause...lol.

Years ago I had a professor who told us that ALL Americans, including Catholic and Jewish Americans, were really Protestants.

What he meant is that our national character makes us instinctually form our own relationship with God and decide for ourselves what we think is right and wrong.(I.e., we take the maligned "cafeteria" approach to religion and morality.)

Well it would seem that the same thing is also true in the UK.

To some some degree.KEEP in mind, however, that if Christians and Jews do form a personal relationship with GOD;it must always be within the context of "The Greatest and
Unalterable Laws Ever Given BY GOD HIMSELF to man:THE TEN COMMANDMENTS."

Don't forget the fact that the Catholic Church is above all a business. What makes that business thrive is growing membership. Therefore all good Catholics are EXPECTED to procreate, creating more Catholics. Therefore any action that mittigates the creation of more Catholic babies is a sin. Remember - don't spill the seed!

No, that is called the rhythm method which the church advances.
What if a man doesn't finish where he started and there is no sperm to fertilize the egg. That is contraception of sorts? Is that a no no?
Well, it's not natural and the church is all for keeping it natural.
Then I guess you only have sex with the intent to have children...I guess you better get all you can get before menapause...lol.
I think the church made some kind of pronouncement in which they recognized that sex can be for more than just procreation, but I don't have the details.

When I was in Catholic HS we were taught that sex should be pleasurable- that it was not 'dirty' but, it was for a husband and wife. I never learned the teachings that sex was 'dirty'. This class was taught by a nun. Masturbation was only frowned on if it became obsessive and included pornography. Of course, it was a Catholic school so they didn't promote abortion or sex without marriage- but, it was progressive for what others were taught.
