For a man who abducted a twelve year old girl and married her when she was thirteen, it is no consolation to John Mark Karr that Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland after 31 years for a lesser act.

On Christmas night 2008, a message titled "Let Them Die!" was received by detective Oliver Gray. The message was signed "Daxis the Conqueror" but could just as well have been signed "Napoleon Bonaparte" for what it was worth. When does American law enforcement know when to take a message seriously and when to discount it?

Karr Contemplates Creation of Cult
Karr as the charismatic leader of a sex cult surrounded by young female followers might seem far fetched but the FBI took it seriously. It might have been the oddest in a long line of investigations launched by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security over the months and years following his 2006 arrest for first degree murder. Karr's attorneys advised that federal authorities would watch him for the rest of his life.
