Anti-gay effort opposing Parker motivates ministers, conservatives

Full story: feeds.chron.com

A cluster of socially conservative Houstonians is planning a campaign to discourage voters from choosing City Controller Annise Parker in the December mayoral runoff because she is a lesbian, according to multiple ministers and conservatives involved in the effort. The group is motivated by concerns about a “gay takeover” of City Hall, given that two other candidates in the five remaining City Council races are also openly gay, as well as national interest driven by the possibility that Houston could become the first major U.S. city to elect an openly gay woman.

Ah, but they will say they are not being bigoted. No, not at all. They just prefer a woman that will suck c**k and swallow, that's all, nothing personal.

They're wasting their time. She got more votes than anyone in the election, but because there were four candidates didn't get a big enough majority so now it's down to a run off. The night of the election the 'conservative' candidate allowed some h8ter to deliver a prayer attacking her 'lifestyle' and the media ate him up and spit him out for it. People here will vote for her irregardless of her sexuality. She's been the City controller for years.

I look for her to win. The churchies don't have much pull in city government here, but they sure do like to make a lot of hateful noise.

How ironic in the 21st century! Gays are the new Blacks. Where "gay" appears in this news item one could substitute Black, and we would be right back in the pre-1960s period. But when such discrimination is focused on gays, no one pays much heed---or they ignore it. I guess there will always have to be whipping boys in our society. But it certainly would be nice if gays refused to put up with what so-called "ministers" and business interests dish out.

Believe it or not, southerns give up bigoted mentalities fairly quickly when its made an issue of live and let live. It doesn't surprise me Houston would elect an open lesbian. If she's good at the job why not?

Their concern is baseless and her track record is an indicator that she can make a great mayor.

#Hesed, you forgot to also point out the moral failure of the voters for being bigots. Voters should ask themselves, what have I done for the city, aside from telling people who are righteous and who aren't? How well did I do in stepping on people's rights?

The state should be separated from the church! We're having a similar problem in the Philippines. Our national poll body rejected an LGBT partylist to run for congress twice:

At this age, you'd think people would be wiser and more sensitive. But nope, bigots, racists and the ignorants are still everywhere.
