eh.. but in the actual article it makes it clear that while they call it 'marriage', your rights are not the same - no adoption allowed and cannot take spouse's name. It's sort of odd that Hungary was willing to adopt something with less rights than opposite-sex marriage but nonetheless, call it Marriage'; yet, we Americans are willing to give gays a lot of the rights of marriage (so long as we Don't call it 'marriage'). Just a thought.-Though it might just be a lack of synonyms in Hungarian that we seem to have an endless supply of (civil union, domestic partnership, same-sex-partnership,..etc.). It would be a hoot if they didn't have ANY other word for a "publicly recognized deep and loving commitment to another person" than 'marriage'(one day we'll have that difficulty hopefully).

It's still cool that they're taking steps in the right direction.

I believe they are actually first-class civil unions but technically not marriage. Still knocks America off the shelf

Right on, Hungry! There are some eastern European countries who seem to want to join the modern world.

I have to agree with you somewhat. It is embarrassing. Leader of the free world, HAH!

Sometimes I think that Iran and Saudi Arabia will have universal gay marriage before the U.S. does.

Hungary and the Czech Republic were never really Eastern European in character. They were lumped in with Eastern Europe due to the "Iron Curtain's" path but traditionally both, along with Slovenia, were more Central European in outlook and thought. On the other hand, Poland, Slovakia, the Baltics, the remainder of the Balkans and the former Soviet constituents are still rather backwards. I doubt will see a lot of progress from them on gay issues soon.

Generally, that has been their history. The latter alway looked eastward; the former more westward. Remember that the Czech Republic is the westernmost Slavic land and much of it lies west of much of Austria. It could really almost be considered part of Western Europe.

The law is just one thing, but if there's no support of the society behind it, it makes it very hard to practice ur rights. Hungarian gayz are living in the closet and they will/have to live there for long

Last years pride parade was horrible, radical groups attacked the people, and since this groups won European Parlament Seats (!) this year's election, I'm afraid what's gonna happen this year :(
