Cuba Libre`- Gay Rights and Evil Dictators.

I find it quite ironic that Cuba, a country that successive U.S. governments have called a totalitarian state and the “Last remnant of the Evil Empire” is moving toward expanding the rights of gays and lesbians, while a major political party in the world's leading democracy and its candidate for President are fighting so hard to restrict them.

Mariela Castro sounds a fabulous person and has promoted gay rights in Cuba for quite some time - However was she being dumb or diplomatic when she said recently
"Defending equal rights for Cubans, of all sexual orientations, is a key principle of the Cuban revolution led by her uncle Fidel Castro, who overthrew dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959"
Her history ain't too great is it?- That bastard Fidel didn't exactly do ANYTHING to back gay rights during his tiresome spell in charge for HIS people in HIS revolution.
Gays, Prisoners, Writers, PWA's, Non-Communists are among those he and his bullies cast out to sea,(yes literally/actually).

Do he ever say "sorry, what was I thinking back then"? Not yet he ain't and neither have the rest of the management in Cuba.

USA has a huge ex-Cuban population ask them what they think of Fidel, all of them, the ones who ran and the ones who were floated out to sea.

It would indeed be ironic if Cuba beat USA to same sex marriage. I look forward to visiting Cuba one day, but I will wait until that ex-cigar smoking piece of nastiness Fidel has stopped wasting oxygen.

ooooohhh.....That feels so much better. My Moto: Forgive & Remember

I still sadly remember how Fidel Castro, used to call us 'maricones' and mariconsones'(He still does). If you don't believe me,just watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch...
I believe that our only hope for gay rights in Cuba would be possible if Mariela Castro (A 'Dyke' herself)' who is Raul Castro's daughter, becomes Cuba's next president. She is our only hope for a future gay friendly Cuban society.I agree when you say "That bastard Fidel didn't exactly do ANYTHING to back gay rights during his tiresome spell in charge for HIS people in HIS revolution". Neither he backed any rights to gay blacks in the past 50 years. There is still a long way to go in Cuba. They must start defending homosexuals against homophobia and gay bashing and other forms of discrimination as a major element of Cuba's gay rights, something gay rights groups see as part of a broader struggle for human rights.I visited Cuba twenty years ago, as a member of a gay black association, and I still remember how they laughed behind my back and called me a 'Negro Mariconson'.

As a gay black republican,I strongly endorse Arizona Sen. John McCain as our next US president.I also support the ticket led by McCain and his choice for vice presidential running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Our Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin yesterday accused Democrat Barack Obama of "palling around with terrorists" because of an association with a former '60s radical, stepping up an effort to portray Obama as unacceptable to American voters.
I believe McCain will be a better commander-in-chief than Obama, who also opposes gay marriage. If we have an experienced, seasoned person defending the country in this dangerous age, we will be able to argue about the gay agenda later. Yes, I am a Massachusetts Republican, which is about the same as being an Alabama Democrat. But don’t call me a “liberal.” That’s an insult.
Vote for a war horo. Vote McCain.

I'm proud to be a Liberal and not insulted - and I'm certainly not Politically Correct - I detest Communist dictators as much as I detest Christian Fundamentalists right wing extremists- they are all control freaks - Look up the word Liberal in a dictionary, if you used the word correctly to described a country, it would sound like the best place to live.

By all means detest the governments of Cuban, Iraq, Iran etc but don't be afraid of them, that way they win. Real Liberals have more balls than that. Remember what happens when you point guns and missiles at people? They usually end up hating you. Don't give them the satisfaction. If others can't evolve and live democratically, slap an embargo on them until they wake up.

We can all stay away from Cuba and Haiti until their governments demonstrate that they trust their citizens. We can stay away from Jamaica until their general popultion evolve into nice people who don't require weed as part of their national diet. Imagine how nasty those dreads would be to us batty boys if they stopped smoking weed.

There are better places close by to visit in the area, like the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico where the locals know how to show respect and cast a vote.

The USA needs truly Libral folks as much as Cuba does. Does Cuba have oil?

I agree with you! The word liberal is misused by politicians. Liberal means being free which left wing politicians do not necesarily believe in.

You can be ca conservative as well as a liberal. I am conservative in some issues, liberal with others. However, if I have to choose a party, I go with the Republicans. I find them to be more patriotic & to really care for America, whereas the democrats have been infiltrated by antiamerican elements that seek to hurt/destroy our nation.

I don't like obama, he is a wild card. Preaches change, but does not clarify what he means by change, & lets everyone fantasize that it is the change that they desire. If elected, I believe he will surprise us all with many umpleasant & undesired atempts to change our American way of life. Unfortunately most people in this country are politically naive, and think that they'll get what they wish just by wishing it. Fidel Castro did the same in Cuba in 1959.

While I applaud Cuba's tentative moves towards equality, the facts on the ground in Cuba remain as follows:

1) Lesbian-Gay bars/discos in Cuba: ZERO.
2) Gay pride parade marches in Cuba (cumulative history): ZERO
3) Apologies given directly to the Gay community in Cuba for Fidel Castro's policy of interning Gay people into UMAP units" ZERO
4) Pardon's granted to political Gay prisoners in Cuba such as Reinaldo Arenas: ZERO
5) Can Gay Cubans visit outside of Cuba: NO

While talk is good. I'd like to see something besides ZERO here.

While I don't like Bastistiano anti-Gay Cuban exiles like Sen. Mel Martinez more than the next Gay person, we should make sure that it is ACTION, not words that we should applaud. All I saw here was sex change operations as a concrete action to help LGBT persons. Anyone find anything else here?

You forgot to mention gay marriage, which is a taboo in the island. I see a lot of words being flown around, but not actions.I'm sure you'll remember the following words: "I'm part of this country, like it or not. And I have the right to work for its future" Diego, the gay character in Strawberry and Chocolate, told his straight friend." In the early years of the revolution much of the world was homophobic. It was the same there in Cuba and led to acts which I consider unjust.
What I see now is that Cuban society have the desire to take initiatives which would prevent such things happening again.
But it remains an uphill struggle. Old prejudices remain deeply ingrained, particularly amongst the older generation. It's even worst for black transexuals ,like me .I still remember my visit to Cuba in June,to attend Cuba's first gay pride march which was planned for June 25th,but the government canceled it, moments before it was to begin.Continuing discrimination towards LGBT people ranges from workplace bias to some folks still being jailed for same-sex passion.
There has been some changes, but Cuba it's certainly not queer heaven gay paradise.

Thank you Doc Proper in New Jersey. Let me tell you a personal story. I sailed to Miami in July 1961 on a raft with my partner Jorge. At that time Miami had many Cubans but all were white and straight. I, being black and gay had many problems while I tried to assimilate into the exile society. I tried and stopped wearing lipstick and cross dressing to no avail. In Hialeah, for instance I was an outcast and hated as much as Castro. Yes, my fellow compatriots considered me being both gay and black were a crime. I, along with my life-long partner Jorge was forced to move to Puerto Rico. Here we were more accepted as was Ricardito (Doc Proper) in New Jersey.(He is also black and gay) So I and Jorge set up home in the gay barrio in San Juan and hope to one day return to Havana maybe this Friday when Fidel dies. It is sad to be both black and gay and anti-Castro and still not be accepted by those Puto Blanco's in Miami. I am WE JUST DON"T CARE and I am proud to be black and gay and will fight for gay rights in Miami. Arriba Che abajo Fidel. Adelante Siempre!
