Arizona Fights Another So-Called "Marriage Amendment"
History was made in 2006 when Arizona became the first and only state to defeat an anti-gay marriage amendment.
Arizona Together is the group that worked to defeat the proposition that had been put on the ballot by a voter initiative. Then the proposition was written to take benefits away from unmarried straight couples as well as written into the constitution that marriage can only be between one man and one woman. In 2008, Arizona fights a tougher battle. This time Prop. 102 is strictly going after gay marriage. The proposition is only trying to put that marriage is between one man and one woman on the ballot. The other difference is this proposition was put on the ballot by the legislators. This saved the proponents of the measure hundreds of thousands of dollars to not pay people to get signatures and get the measure on the ballot by voter initiative. As of October 3rd the backers of the proposition have raised over $6.9 million - 17 times what Arizona Together has raised to fight the proposition.
