Straight dad beats gay son with baseball bat. Chases boy from home

An 18-year-old returning from a Pride festival in South Carolina was assaulted by his father with a baseball bat. During the assault, the teen's 49-year-old father yelled, cursed, swung a baseball bat, prayed and tried to 'cast the demon of homosexuality out of him'.

I to had a father like that but I ended up with a broken hip.I was also bought hookers cause that will make you straight.I hope this boy is o.k. and the father is locked away and given parenting one o one.We can't alter what are feelings are be proud of who and what you are.I wish the Son well and hope the father gets his mind straight.We have enough in this world to worry about our son in drag or marching in a parade should not be one of them.Rick

I remember when my own son told me he was gay. I remember the feeling that came over me. I am not exactly sure what those emotions were but to deny that at least part of it was disappointment, fear and confusion would not be honest.

Then I looked at my son's face and all I felt was love. Love for a son that I had given birth to. Love for a son that I had raised. Love that was unconditional. I loved my son before I knew he was gay and I loved him after I new he was gay.

In my heart I can not understand how a parent can turn their back on their child. I do not know how they could throw their child out on the street. I do not know how they could live their life and never see their child again.

Please remember not all of us heterosexual parents are as this man. We love our kids, we are proud of them and we are here to support them.

And people are worried about the "damage" that can be done to a kid from having a loving parent that just happens to be gay???

Sadly, this stuff happens WAY more than we know due to the lack of reporting that often accompanies domestic violence. I've counseled a lot of gay people that were physically assaulted by their own parents and almost never do they ever report it, especially if they're still financially dependant on them.

Even more tragic, a lot of churches actually *encourage* beating of children to force them to do what they're told. "Spare the rod" and all...

Fortunately, I think parents like you are the vast majority of parents--living up to the standard of unconditional love that's necessary to be a good parent.

People that would take a baseball bat to their own children (or anyone else not currently assaulting them) are truly sick and twisted individuals.

I've worked with P-Flag for many years now. We thank goodness every day for parents like you while we work to heal the damage done by the other type of parent.

Rick, I am so sorry that you had to endure this. I breaks my heart to know that any of you had to suffer especially at the hands of a parent. All I can say to you is that there are parents out here that love you. I think that I can safely say that there are parents out here that not only care about their own child that is gay, we care about you all. We see the struggles that our own children go through and our hearts go out to those who don't have that support. Believe be when I say we not only have enough love for our own children there's enough to go around for all of you.

Lyle, You do not deserve to have any children, gay or straight. If you would turn you back on them simply because they didn't turn out as you envisioned then you have no right to be a parent.

well, hello everyone. im sorry to hear wat happened. I think the dad will get whats coming to him. I agree that a majority of parents still care about their children. At least i kno my parents accept me and nothing has ever changed that.

My teenage son came out last year. My reaction was, "Yea, I know. Give me a hug". I had suspected for a long time that he was gay and it didn't bother me in the least. He is who he is.

Remember people, your child is the same person that they were one second after they come out that they were one second before!
