Senate Approves Repeal of HIV Travel and Immigration Ban

In a decision highly praised by gay and lesbian advocacy groups, the U.S. Senate voted this week to repeal a ban on HIV positive visitors and immigrants.

Its about time. There is no threat by them or to them from entering this country. It might actually be a co-operative effort eventually from other nations to help provide the proper care for any and all diseases (not just HIV). Although HIV is very manageable now in the world.

Because HIV mutates at a frequent rate, drug resistant strains from drug-naive patients have arisen around the world. Allowing immigrants infected with HIV into the United States will add existing and recombinant drug-resistant strains to flourish, rendering current drug therapies useless to those infected with the newly evolved strains. Watch for stories of "Super HIV strains" to appear in the near future, and watch for the current 15 year survival rate to plummet as these drug-resistant strains become more widespread.
