Oklahoma: No such thing as gay hate crime

Twice within the past week, Robert Stotler and his partner have been targets of anti-gay messages at their Tulsa home.

Stotler and his partner say they are victims of hate crimes, but police say they are not. Their reports call the crimes acts of vandalism or malicious mischief.

The term hate crime is stupid. All crimes are hate crimes. Like I would commit a crime against someone but I really liked them. I beat up an old white lady and that's fine but God forbid it is worse to beat up some gay person. Crime is crime.

Out of Control: If you beat up an old white lady because she's old or because she's white, then it's a hate crime. If you beat her up for any other reason, it's a "regular" crime.

Well let's see... Using your standard for a hate crime, a person who believes that white people are superior to African American people wouldn't be comitting a hate crime if that person, say, burned a cross in the front yard of the African American person's house?

The concept of hate crimes are that they are a form of ethnic intimidation aimed not specifically at the individual victim but at all the members of that individual's group. They send the message that 'members of our group will attack members of your group' and they often provoke retaliation.

A case similar to this one occurred in Tennessee where neo-Nazis burned a cross in the yard of a gay man - and for Tennessee law it is simple vandalism, as if another gay had burned a trash heap, despite vastly different motivations and outcomes

A thousand gays should go over and sit on Stotler's front lawn for a week or so. I guarantee these tough guys won't be so tough anymore. They play the tough guy only as long as they perceive themselves to be in the moral majority. It would not surprise me to learn the culprits behind these attacks are "good christians". I bet they go to church every Sunday and think they're just doing the lord's work.

Supreme Court says we can all carry a handgun. My suggestion is for all gay people to arm themselves - legally. Then while you've got your gun go anywhere you wish and do what you wish as long as it isn't violence on another, but if they attack you KILL THEM.

I have to agree. The days of us turning and running away should be over. If we are attacked we need to fight back and, yes, kill them. The score needs to be evened up a bit and the lesson will only be learned once these phobes realize there's a price to pay for f*ckin w/us. Be out, proud and dangerous IMO.

I wish our gay community would quit looking to the government to protect us. We have the right to own and possess a gun. I've been a victim of gay bashing once before I owned a gun. Never again. If me or my partner are ever threatened again, then I will do what needs to be done in order to neutralize the threat.

All the hate crime laws in the world arent going to help you if you laying on the ground in a pool of your own blood.

Did you read the story? A mans property was vandelized and his truck set on fire. The people who did it made their opinion of him and their point of view quite clear. This isn't a matter of someone who disaproves of gays. This is criminal activity. It is most obvious that the catalyst behind the actions was wanton cruelty, fed by ignorant prejudice.

These crimes are not just aimed at an individual, they are aimed at a community. Therefore, the term "hate crime" is even weak, the perpetrators are actually acting like terrorists.

OK, I'll concede the point that the perp was wrong to commit the crime and damage the property.

I'm just sick of gays labeling everything that moves, talks or breathes, full of hate. That is just not the case and it makes me not want to consider their POVs.

People believe homosexuality is immoral. It is ALWAYS going to be that way even if the laws change to make allowances and accommodate gays.
