Gay-marriage advocates hope to repeal old law

State lawmakers are expected to vote next week on repealing a 1913 law that prevents out-of-state gay and lesbian couples from getting married in Massachusetts, reigniting a divisive debate on an issue that has ...

As a matter of legal common-sense and justice, this 1913 law should be repealed. As a practical matter, it is poor tactics to do so until there is something closing to consensus on the divisive issue of marriage equality.

We saw the results of this divisiveness in the hateful anti-equality amendments which passed in droves in 2006.

Will,
What does it matter to you? You will never marry anyone from either sex, you don't have children, and most likely live off government support. Just how will gay marriage affect you in any way? Get a life of your own.

OK so let's take inventory.

We have a domestic partnership from Broward County, Florida, which in practical terms doesn't really provide any protections, and that might be overturned in November.

We have a civil union from New Jersey, which is not recognized in Florida, but gives us theoretically the same rights as heterosexual married couples when we are visiting New Jersey (and all of New England, for that matter.) New Jersey is expected to upgrade to full marriage in the near future, but that also would not be recognized in Florida.

We are traveling to California next week to get a legal marriage. That will also not be recognized in Florida, but eventually moving to California is a viable option. Of course, that also might get overturned in November.

So if all those fall through, then I guess we could get married in Massachusetts - which would not be recognized in Florida, but we'd have the option of living in Massachusetts, New York, or Rhode Island.(All too cold for me.)

With all that, we will still have to go through the legal paperwork and expense for basic things like hospital decision-making here in Florida.

It's time for everyone to get over themselves and just legalize it everywhere.

Like it or not, marriage and family are the basic building block of American Society. No significant percent of homosexuals has "married" in ANY country that allows the contrived oxymoron and only about 1.6% of the US population claims to be GLBT anyway, so homosexual "marriage" fails on this one!
Children are the usual and natural result of real marriage. No child will EVER be born as a direct result of a homosexual relationshit, so homomarriage fails on this one, too!
Having both a mother and father in the home is one of the best statistical predictors of a child's future success in life. No homosexual relationshit can provide this.
Marriage is recognized as moral and necessary by nearly all Americans. Americans overwhelmingly reject homosexual "marriage" and most find homosexual acts to be immoral and damaging.

Unbelievable the immaturity on this thread. People have a right to disagree or agree with anything they want. People are diverse; opinions are diverse. May I suggest to some of you to GROW UP and let people voice what's on their minds.

WHY DO YOU THINK YOU SHOULD HAVE DISCRIMINATORY BENEFITS AND SUBSIDIES FOR A RELATIONSHIT THE MOST AMERICANS FIND IMMORAL?
WHY SHOULD YOU RECEIVE DISCRIMINATORY BENEFITS AND SUBSIDIES THAT ELDERLY SISTERS SHARING A HOME DON'T GET AND WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR?

Any law that was based on mollifying other states with Jim Crow-era miscegenation laws ought to be off the books.

We welcome diversity, Rhonda. The problem with Wil (Gunther) is that he post the same spam, same arguments and same lies over and over and no matter how many times we debunk his comments or ignore them, they eventually lead to off topic threads and just take up space for legitimate arguments. If he were able to give constructive arguments about the topic on hand that could be discussed, it would be different. But by posting the same comment over and over, he had lost his legitimacy and is basically no different than someone standing up in a room full of people and shouting the same thing over and over while they try and have a discussion.

Now... as for this current topic, this is from the article:
"The 1913 statute prevents Massachusetts from sanctioning marriages that are not legal in the state where the couple lives. The law was enacted in part to prevent interracial couples from evading their own state's ban by traveling to Massachusetts to marry."

So a law meant to foster bigotry based on race that would obviously now be unconstitutional should not be used to foster bigotry based on sexual orientation. Like they say, put a hat on a pig and it's still a pig.

We have a dual residency in OH and MA. Because of that we were allowed to get married in MA. But while in OH, which is most of the time, we are not married but my financial advisor would appreciate it if our marriage was recognized by all states and the federal government. He hates tax time....LOL.

We have been lucky so far that we have not had any problems with hospitals or doctors in OH but it could still happen.

Best wishes to you and your partner on your pending marriage in CA. Seems like it was just last year that I was saying the same thing to you.

Think of all the wedding gifts if you get married in each state that supports it.:-)

LOL yes it was almost a year ago. We got married (civil union) in New Jersey on September 8, and will get "married married" in California either July 14-15-16 (something like that.)

Naturally, we will not be accepting gifts this time around lol. This is a formality more than anything else, but in practical terms, we also want to be prepared. We see a window open which may close in November. If that opportunity is no longer available after November, and if the marriages from now to then are still legit (they should be) then we still have the option of moving to California at some point.

And although it wouldn't be soon, we would be prepared to take part in a lawsuit against the state of Florida, if necessary and if possible.(I think we'd make pretty good witnesses.)

If NJ upgrades, I could conceivably do dual residency between NJ and FL, although not sure how that works, haven't researched it yet. I know there are plenty of "snowbirds" who go back and forth.

YEA Mass.
It will only take half of the legislature to remove this old law. When it took 2/3 of them to take the gay marriage ban off the ballot...they did it. I read in the Boston Globe this morning that they didn't want to promise anything yet as they haven't confirmed which way a lot of people would vote, but I can't see them keeping this ridiculous law. I love it here...just wish we had more than 4 months of good weather.

Does Obama support gay marriage?
Obama has no definite answer because his answers depend on the state's dominating position on the subject.

Does Obama really care care about gay rights?
Read on to find the answer.

Lately Obama has been wooing the support of gay people by saying that he rejects the proposed California gay marriage ban even though he had expressed the view that he was not in favor of gay marriage in Illinois.

I think it's a waste of time to discuss whether Obama is for or against gay marriage. Whatever his current position, it only reflects his desire to get more votes by shifting his views according to the majority of the democratic voters.

The issue that I want to take is whether Obama has real concern for the well-beings of gay people.

Very few people know that last year within a short period of time three gay member of Obam's church were brutally murdered same execution style with bullets in the head. Some of those murdered were alleged to have gay sex with Obama in the church. I'm not going to do any speculations here about who murdered them. It is up to the Chicago police to solve the murders.

However, I want to point out that indications of Obama's reaction to the three murders do not fit in well with the normal reaction of someone who claims to care about gay rights.

Imagine that if those were Obama's gay brothers in the family who got brutally murdered one after another. As a senator and member of the family, shouldn't Obama have expressed condolence about the death of his brothers, expressed concern about the safety of other gays in the community and urge the authorities to do their best to solve the murders?

So why Obama failed to behave like a caring brother should when the three gays murdered were Obama's brothers in the Lord under the same roof?

The reason is clear. He doesn't really care about the gay people and gay rights at all.

Obama's apathy towards the murder of the three gay brothers in his church reminds me of the story in the Bible about King Solomon's wise judgment to decide the real mother of a baby. Two women claimed to be the mother of a living baby. Solomon asked someone to bring him a sword and said that he would cut the baby into two halves to give each of them half. The real mother was deeply hurt by the king's apparently cruel decision to kill the baby, so she begged the king not to cut the baby into two halves and asked the king to give the baby to the other woman. But the other woman agreed to divide the baby into two halves. So King Solomon knew the woman who begged for the baby's life was the real mother and he ordered to give the living baby to her.

It is regrettable that nowadays in America some law enforcement officers, judges and juries, have all but cast away their wisdom and commonsense to embrace ignorance bred by racism. That's why we saw O J Simpson ran from the police to avoid being caught but got away with murder because of the ignorant juries found him not guilty based on the contrive argument that O J was the victim of racism. That's why those foolish Obamanites claim Obama is for gay rights even though his reaction to the murder of the three gay bothers in the Lord is far from what someone in his position would have should he really care about them and about gay rights.

Obama is the most hypocritical and questionable presidential candidate I have ever seen. If you believe Obama is for gay rights, it's likely you would have no problem believing that Obama is for racial unity even though he hid the racist doctrine of the BLACK VALUE SYSTEM in the closet during the speech ostensibly to bring racial unity and failed to denounce and fire his co-chairman, Jesse Jackson Jr., who compared Obama's presidential campaign to O.J. Simpson murdering his Caucasian wife.

Don't become the NICOLE BROWN GENERATION. Obama would say anything you like to hear just for your votes but he loves America just like O J loved Nicole.
