California firefighters make gains on fires

With the ferocious Santa Ana winds dying down, firefighters on Monday made gains on three raging wildfires that have destroyed hundreds of homes and forced thousands of residents to flee.

Wind gusts had peaked to more than 70 mph at the height of the fires over the weekend, but by Monday morning they weakened to about 20 mph, the National Weather Service said.

'It's wonderful news,' Angela Garbiso, a spokeswoman with Orange County Fire Authority, said Monday. 'When it calms down, it obviously makes it easier for us to handle this massive undertaking.'

Burned-out mobile home residents fear for future

Hundreds of nails that once held together single-story, pastel-colored mobile homes now litter the gutters lining the curving streets.

Pipes still spurt water, looking for faucets that aren't there anymore. Toolboxes lay unused and unharmed, surrounded by a world of repairs to make.

Ceramic garden animals still smile in front yards, blackened with soot and surrounded by charred shrubs and trees.

And on Sunday, the day after a wildfire tore through and wreaked the devastation, police began going lot to lot with nine cadaver-sniffing dogs to search for any human remains in the Oakridge Mobile Home Park in the Sylmar section of Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley.

Southern California battles devastating wildfires

Southern Californians endured a third day of devastation Saturday as wind-blasted wildfires torched hundreds of mobile homes and mansions, forced thousands of people to flee and shut down major freeways.

No deaths were reported, but the Los Angeles police chief said he feared authorities might find bodies among the 500 burned dwellings in a devastated mobile home park that housed many senior citizens.

'We have almost total devastation here in the mobile park,' Fire Capt. Steve Ruda said. 'I can't even read the street names because the street signs are melting.'

New Calif. wildfire breaks out in Orange County

Fire officials in Southern California say a wildfire has broken out in Orange County and high wind is pushing flames toward a subdivision.

Television footage shows at least three houses on fire in the area of Corona and Yorba Linda.

Officials said evacuations were underway.

Orange County Fire Authority Lynnette Round says the blaze started around 9 a.m. Saturday and wind was carrying embers toward homes.

The area is about 40 miles south of Los Angeles, where a wind-driven wildfire has destroyed a number of homes.

Fires destroy homes in LA, Santa Barbara County

Fire officials say wind of 'near hurricane force' has grounded some of their water-dropping aircraft as they battle a wildfire that has burned at least 10 homes and forced thousands of people to evacuate in northern Los Angeles.

The California Highway Patrol has shut a second freeway in the area.

CHP officer Patrick Kimball says a section of Interstate 5 near Sylmar was shut early Saturday as flames spread west toward the freeway.

About 5,000 residents have been evacuated since the fire started late Friday, and authorities say more evacuations are under way. Patients at one hospital were evacuated when the blaze knocked out power.
