SILVERADO CANYON >> More than 800 firefighters are assigned to dig fire lines around a brush fire that has blackened about 1,220 acres in Silverado Canyon since Friday, and is now about 20 percent contained, an Orange County battalion chief said today. On the second night of firefighting, a helicopter was assigned to observe ground operations but not make water drops, said OCFA Battalion Chef Mike Petro.

A wildfire in Northern California destroyed two homes while a much larger blaze proved stubborn amid high temperatures and dry brush in Southern California. The Northern California blaze broke out shortly after 2 p.m. in the Sierra Nevada foothills about halfway between Sacramento and Reno and grew to 250 acres, destroying two homes and three outbuildings, said Daniel Berlant, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The May 8 house fire that sent flames shooting 30 feet into the air killed Clayton Carnes, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy's mother, her boyfriend and her 14-month-old child escaped the blaze and were treated for smoke inhalation.

Berkeley: Woman falls three stories to escape apartment fire

Firefighters were called to the three-story building in the 3100 block of King Street at 9:01 a.m. on reports of a fire with residents trapped inside a top floor apartment, Berkeley fire Deputy Chief Avery Webb said. Before firefighters arrived, a woman fell while possibly trying to jump from the burning apartment into a nearby tree, Webb said.

UPDATED: Firefighters extinguish Basildon car fires after suspected arson attacks

Crews wore breathing apparatus and used one hose reel jet to extinguish the blaze, which had affected a neighbouring vehicle, within 15 minutes. Firefighters were alerted to the second fire, at 6am in Gloucester Park, by a lifeguard on his way to work at Basildon Sporting Village.
