Well, at least one religious leader figured it out. Maybe the evangelicals will catch up in another hundred years or so.

For the pope to say a stupid thing like he stated, proves to me that the catholics are either stupid or want to conform to a new world order.the catholic church, as a whole i respect.I think that the catholics in america should call him on that statement.

madame/mr. charlieb1950, pardon me for bringing this up, but MOST Catholics are comfortable with science. As a matter of fact, the education arm of the Catholic church, the Jesuits, were one of the organizations that reintroduced a systemic study of science back into Europe after the Dark Ages. On a personal note, my father was studying to be a Jesuit priest before WW2 killed all of the other male members of his family. That philosophy is carried through into many of the EXCELLENT Catholic schools around the world. You may note that Catholic schools are very often the best schools in any given community. That is CERTAINLY the case here in metro Detroit, and ALL of them teach evolution in science classes along with the Bible in religion classes. No conflict there.

Creationism is the absurdity. Everything in science points to the fact that the creation fable is just a fable. Wake up people.

You need to look at another link on that article:

Pope weighs in on creation controversy

He quoted St. Basil the Great, a 4th-century saint, as saying some people,“fooled by the atheism that they carry inside of them, imagine a universe free of direction and order, as if at the mercy of chance.”

“How many of these people are there today? These people,‘fooled by atheism,’ believe and try to demonstrate that it’s scientific to think that everything is free of direction and order,” Benedict said.

“With the sacred Scripture, the Lord awakens the reason that sleeps and tells us: In the beginning, there was the creative word. In the beginning, the creative word — this word that created everything and created this intelligent project that is the cosmos — is also love.”

His comments were immediately hailed by advocates of intelligent design, who hold that the universe is so complex it must have been created by a higher power. Proponents of the concept are seeking to get public schools in the United States to teach it as part of the science curriculum.

I haven't heard seen any official statements from a reliable Catholic News source that he said what this article published on Topix says. If you can find one, let me know. I don't always trust the media to get his statements correct.

This to all the catholics here and around the world.I am not an evangelic.I belong to no church. But i do beleive that jesus christ was who he said he was and by the way still is.When i was a child,my father and mother would take me and my other siblings to church. The church or churches we went to ,in some way or another were anti catholic.I have never known why.I have followed the catholic church through their teachings and what they believe in.I have come to the conclusion that it is the most likely to be the true church christ mentions about.I agree with all of what the church stands for and against.I think that most evangelicals,do not quite get what being a catholic means.Jesus, said he would build his church on the rock, namely PETER.I accept that.

The Catholic Church has long embraced science and as far back as Pius began stating that there was evidence to support evolution.

Most Catholics have no difficulties reconciling their faith with their reason and accept the theory and facts of evolution. We embrace theistic evolution, which is a philosophical viewpoint that God used evolution as His tool in creation.

Catholics do not literally interpret Genesis and do not view the Bible as a scientific text.

JP2 once wrote:.........

"Cosmogony and cosmology have always aroused great interest among peoples and religions. The Bible itself speaks to us of the origin of the universe and its make-up, not in order to provide us with a scientific treatise, but in order to state the correct relationships of man with God and with the universe. Sacred Scripture wishes simply to declare that the world was created by God, and in order to teach this truth it expresses itself in the terms of the cosmology in use at the time of the writer. The Sacred Book likewise wishes to tell men that the world was not created as the seat of the gods, as was taught by other cosmogonies and cosmologies, but was rather created for the service of man and the glory of God. Any other teaching about the origin and make-up of the universe is alien to the intentions of the Bible, which does not wish to teach how heaven was made but how one goes to heaven."

Work Cited:

(Pope John Paul II, 3 October 1981 to the Pontifical Academy of Science, "Cosmology and Fundamental Physics")?

Please pay attention to his last sentence,

“Any other teaching about the origin and make-up of the universe is alien to the intentions of the Bible, which does not wish to teach how heaven was made but how one goes to heaven.”

The Bible only intends to show people how to attain Grace with God, period.

Our local Catholic high schools teach genetics and evolutionary biology in their bio, honors bio and AP bio courses. They teach evolution and evolution only. No mention is made of theistic evolution or God as the author. Then, theistic evolution is discussed in religion class.

As a judge at the state level science fair I have spoken to Catholic science teachers about evolution and theistic evolution and they are adamant about keeping the two separate and distinct. They discuss science and science only in the science classroom. It is important for them to separate the natural and the supernatural.(BTW, their students always do an outstanding job in the competition).

Yes Charlie, Catholics do have it both ways as we are gifted with both faith and reason.
