House passes 'no welfare for weed' bill

The House passed a bill Tuesday that could make it a little harder for people to use government welfare payments to buy marijuana in states where the drug is legal. The bill would prevent people from using government-issued welfare debit cards to make purchases at stores that sell marijuana.

23 arrested in drug trafficking investigation

Federal and state officials have announced the arrest of 23 people and the search for two more charged in connection with what officials say was a drug distribution ring based in Little Rock. Encouragingly, the new study also found that alcohol use, binge drinking and the use of tobacco products among young people between the ages of 12 and 17 also dropped between 2002 and 2013. The annual survey of 70,000 people aged 12 and older across the United States revealed that between 2002 and 2013, substance dependence or abuse problems among this age group also dropped from 8.9 percent to 5.2 percent.

Prescription Painkiller Deaths up, but Not as Fast

Overdose deaths from powerful painkillers are still rising in the U.S., but not like they used to - probably because of new restrictions on methadone, according to government scientists. In 2011, there were more than 41,000 drug overdose deaths nationwide, up from more than 38,000 the previous year.

California residents sentenced after pot bust

Two California residents who were arrested after 115 pounds of marijuana was found in their car during a Montana traffic stop have been sentenced to the supervision of the Montana Department of Corrections . The Stillwater County News reports District Judge Blair Jones sentenced Rick and Dawn Voight of Hayward to five years with the department for possession of dangerous drugs with intent to distribute.

Small number of drugs behind kids' accidental poisonings

A relatively small number of medications are responsible for sending thousands of young children to the hospital for accidental ingestion, a U.S. government study finds. Each year between 2007 and 2011, about 9,500 U.S. children younger than 6 years were hospitalized after getting a hold of family members' medication, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

State police say they've arrested a 22-year-old New York man after he was found with marijuana, cocaine and LSD hidden inside a stuffed animal dressed in an anti-drug T-shirt. Troopers say Gregory Bolongnese , of Plattsburgh, was arrested Monday at the bus station in his hometown near the Canadian border.

Two Canadian-Vietnamese dual citizens have been charged with smuggling heroin and methamphetamine worth 75 million Australian dollars hidden in a consignment of frozen fish fillets shipped from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney. A law enforcement statement said on Monday the men, aged 57 and 55, appeared in a Sydney court on Friday last week on multiple charges related to the shipment of 88 kilograms of heroin and 21 kilograms of methamphetamine.
