Loyola University Maryland men's basketball will open the 2014-2015 regular-season Nov. 14 with an event that will be special for the family of Head Coach G.G. Smith and the Greyhounds' program. Loyola will play their first of 11 non-conference games in Lubbock, Texas, where Smith will face his father and mentor, Tubby Smith, and Texas Tech University.

Texas Tech using heavy rotation on defensive line to stop running attacks

For a brief moment after Bradley Marquez caught the ball in the end zone with more than 2 1/2 minutes left against UTEP, he thought Texas Tech might have scored too quick. And when UTEP's Autrey Golden returned the ensuing Red Raiders' kick off to the 48-yard line and then A face-mask penalty put the Miners at the Tech 33-yard line his worries looked valid.

McElrath holds own at noseguard, makes case for more time

With Texas Tech's noseguard 1-2 of Jackson Richards and Rika Levi both missing Saturday's game, defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstedt allocated their snaps to junior-college transfers Keland McElarth and Marcus Smith and sophomore Anthony Smith. The results were mixed: UTEP rushed for 277 yards, but McElrath showed some playmaking and agility while getting credit for eight tackles and a quarterback pressure.

Texas Tech Fends Off UTEP 30-26

Texas Tech used a balanced attack, and some clutch defense late in fourth quarter to hold off upset minded UTEP, 30-26 late Saturday night in the Sun Bowl. The Miners would strike first on a pair of drives that would end with Jay Mattox field goals, taking a 6-0 lead after a 8 play 44 yard drive was halted, but the Miner would cash in on a 27 yard boot from Mattox to end the first quarter.

Red Raiders corral Cardinals, take UTPA tournament title

The Texas Tech volleyball team came back from a set down to defeat Lamar in four sets and claim the UTPA Tournament title, in Edinburg, Texas, on Friday. The Red Raiders dropped the first set for the second time this weekend, 25-22, but stormed back to take the second, 25-11, before dominating the third, 25-12, and finishing it off with a 25-20 win in the fourth.

Jackson takes charge of Tech defensive line

Out of class by noon, a half hour or so for lunch and in place at the Texas Tech football building by 12:45 p.m. Position meetings begin promptly at 2:15 p.m., so that gives him 90 minutes in between to study video before the group convenes. "I've done it in the past, but it was always a personal thing," Jackson said this week, "just something to do so I can look at it and see where I need to learn better.

Washington shoots for more second-half yards after snapping team's 24-game streak

Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury made it clear from the start of his tenure that he won't make a big to-do over whether his team gets its yards passing or rushing. Only once in 2013 did Tech have an individual rusher reach 80 yards - when DeAndre Washington, Sadale Foster and Kenny Williams ran for 88, 87 and 80 yards, respectively, against Iowa State.
