Michael Cunningham: Longer deal for Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon would show faith
Hurricanes football coach Randy Shannon projected the same confidence as always while standing in front of reporters Friday at the team's media day.

Shannon goes 5-7 his first year, has 3 years left on his deal, and youre calling for an extension? Did I miss something? Are you related to Shannon? What happened to the premise of proving yourself, especially with 8 of these prized recruits not able to report? This is the most idiotic story I have read in a long time.

I like Shannon, but I do not see how giving shannon a contract extension after a 5 and 7 first season is necessary in anybody's mind, except perhaps Shannon's agent.
No matter what contract Shannon gets his job security is about the same. If he produces on the field at the level of JJ or Butch Davis or Dennis Erickson, then the whispering will be about whatever pro job is coming open. If he produces at the same level he did last season, then the U will be making up the difference between the salary of a premier college head coach and an defensive coordinator for some other college team. UM shouldn't be railroaded into that kind of commitment because Shannon's agent gives Michael Cunningham his personal spin. Shannon is well paid, and rightly so. He can prove he produce on the field this season. Until then, let's not talk extension. |

I couldnt agree more with the first 2 comments! why give a guy with 3 yrs left and a first yr record of 5-7 an extension? Only a terrible AD (Dee) would even consider something that stupid. Now, if we go 7-5 or better this year AND are competitive in the games we lose, then, definitely consider an extension.

Why does he deserve another extension UM has done that to often and got burned big time having to pay out millions when they fired Perry and Coker. He is a rookie as a leader and like any CEO or general manager its what have you done for me lately. It's either make it work or get out. If he doesn't get results by the end of next season then it is time for UM to look elsewhere. I do think Shannon will get it done.

It is obvious that Michael Cunningham has never been a boss to anybody. Are you part of the entitlement crowd Michael? Words of encouragement or confidence is all that UM owes Randy Shannon. He has 3 years left on his contract and his 1st year was 5-7. Randy needs to prove himself like any other coach. It's obvious why your a reporter for my fish, uh, I mean bait, wrapper and not calling the shots at the AD Department at UM.

HAHAHA who the heck wrote this stupid story? How is this guy even a journalist. 5-7 and you want an extension? Wow, the UM standards have gone way down.

No extension until he proves he can coach. There is a boat load of talent at UM and coach Shannon needs to do his job immediately. Win or go Home!!!! Urban Myers did it right in Gainesville. Time for Shannon to step up and get it done

Just the headline make me laugh. Look, the guy has 3 years to prove himself. Year 1, a 5-7 record. Now in year two he must have a winning record and a bowl win. Year 3 we should be competing for an ACC championship, no exceptions. At that point - following that season - you decide extend the contract. Remember this is his 1st head coaching job. This is why you are a newspaper writer and not in business.

Let's not forget the the majority of those incredible 5 wins came at the beginning of the season.
This is the most worthless article I've read in a long time. EDITOR: wake up - how can you print this garbage. |

I agree with these prior posts. The best job security is to perform. Especially when performance is the only thing required. After going 5-7, I can't see the need for an extension when there are 3 years left on the contract. If Shannon is concerned about his job, then get results! That doesn't mean achieve the unexpected, but it does mean to get the results he should get with the manpower he has.
If he has a team that should be them team they are playing, then win. If they under perform, or have excessive penalties, then he should be held accountable. A contract extension won't help anything. Does Shannon, his agent, and the author of this story remember the last game at the O.B.? Well, I do and it was a total embarrassment! Lets get some better results this year and then we determine if Shannon sticks around. Remember, this is UM. We should be at least a very good football team year-in and year-out. If Shannon gets us better next year, and there are signs of solid improvement, then he should get an extension. But only then...not now! |

Extend his contract... are you on drugs? While I like Randy and believe he's the right guy for the job... the administration needs to hold him to the same standards as he holds his players and coaches. Don't talk about how good you're gonna be... SHOW US. And getting their ass kicked 48-0 to Virginia in the last game at the Orange Bowl sure as hell doesn't warrant anything other than a wait-and-see posture. AT BEST!

While I agree with everything above, I must underline one key point in all of this. He has THREE YEARS LEFT ON HIS CONTRACT. WHY in the WORLD ARE WE TALKING ABOUT AN EXTENSION???????? So now we're going to sign a four year deal and immediately seek an extension to that deal? I mean don't most people WAIT a little bit until the contract is running out to actually extend it? Do you have NOTHING ELSE TO WRITE? I mean this is news like three years into the future...who cares right now? Why did you waste my life with this?

longer deal would show continued stupiduty of the U, but at least they'd be saving money on salaries even though no one is going to show up to the games

I think Randy would be p***** off he he saw this article. I agree with the above, let him practice what he preaches.
As for other team coaches using that as a tool against Randy, it didn't appear to work this year since he was ranked #1 in some polls and at least in the top 5 in all polls in recruiting! |
|
First of all know the inside information befre you degrade the recruits that are not there. Let me break it down for you they where flagged to make sure their grades and every other thing they needed in high school was taken care of by the way one of the recruits left for miami today because he was cleared. i feel he needs an extension b/c he deserves one if he was a white guy it would be no problem let him do his job just like any man out there. B/c the minute he goes 9-3 you are gonna be saying i told you so. are you even a fan of the hurricanes?...I highly doubt it. But if the a.d. does'nt thats just basicly sayin i have your back until you fail. Go randy and go canes '08 south florida is behind you. "WE THE BEST" |
