Hartford Coach Signs Contract Extension

“Under the leadership of Dan Leibovitz, Hartford men's basketball has a chance to experience more success than it ever has in its Division I history”

After leading Hartford to the first winning season in five years, coach Dan Leibovitz signed a two-year contract extension today. Terms were not disclosed.

Leibovitz, who has fulfilled two years of his original six-year contract, is now signed through the 2013-14 season. The Hawks were 18-16 this season, recording the most victories since the program upgraded to Division I in 1984. They were also 10-6 in America East, advancing to the conference tournament title game for the first time.

'Dan has done an excellent job with the basketball program in a very short period of time, instilling a sense of pride and a winning attitude in our student-athletes, campus community and alumni,' Hartford President Walter Harrison said in a statement. 'We are committed to competing at a high level in men's basketball, and retaining a coach of Dan's caliber is crucial.' Read more

Hood Becomes Hartford's First-Ever WNBA Draft Pick

“She's real talented. She runs the floor well and she has good moves from the top of the key. And playing for Jen Rizzotti didn't hurt.”

- Jen Rizzotti was at Chase Arena Wednesday afternoon. Danielle Hood was in her room at the University of Hartford, doing homework.

Rizzotti was planning on checking out the WNBA draft, but she never got the chance because Hood, a Hartford senior forward, came screaming into the gym with the news that she had been drafted.

'We're pretty excited around here right now,' Rizzotti said.

Hood, who was chosen in the third round, 32nd overall by the expansion Atlanta Dream, is the first player from the Hawks to be drafted, and the second player from the America East (Cindy Blodgett was drafted from Maine in 1998). Hood was invited to pre-draft camp over the weekend at the Final Four in Tampa, but nobody talked to her or Rizzotti. Read more
