Eagles fall at home on De La Rosa's shot with 1.9 seconds left
The American University men's basketball team suffered perhaps its most deflating loss of the season when UMBC guard Chris De La Rosa made a foul-line jumper with 1.9 seconds remaining to beat the Eagles, 59-57, Sunday at Bender Arena.
American immediately called timeout to set up the ensuing inbounds play, but Nick Hendra's desperation heave to Stephen Lumpkins was too high, and the Eagles were unable to get off a shot before time expired against a team that entered winless.
'It was a big-time shot,' American Coach Jeff Jones said of De La Rosa, who finished with 11 points, five assists and no turnovers. 'He's a tough little competitor. We were telling our guys coming into the game he was the head. We had to not just stop him, but he makes their other guys really good. We had to do a good job, and unfortunately too often today we didn't do a good job on him.'
