“I can sit in and get more comfortable back there and think I have a good chance to make every kick. I've gotten better.”
CLEMSON -- After Clemson's second spring scrimmage last year, kicker Richard Jackson described his performance as embarrassing.
This time around, Jackson is slightly more optimistic if not as self-deprecating.
'I haven't been thrown to the back (of the line in practice), so I guess I'm still pushing the starters a little bit,' Jackson said.
Coach Tommy Bowden contends Jackson, a rising redshirt sophomore, is challenging a pair of senior incumbents -- kicker Mark Buchholz and punter Jimmy Maners -- for their jobs. Read more

Bowden stays mum on McElrathbey
“I made a comment Saturday. If you want anything else, get it off that comment or get it from Tim (Bourret, sports information director).
'It's your job to ask the question, it's mine to say no.”
CLEMSON -- The more Clemson refuses to say about Ray Ray McElrathbey's scholarship situation, the more the matter seems to be clarified.
Two days after the school announced McElrathbey would either transfer or go to Clemson graduate school as a student only, coach Tommy Bowden declined to shed further light on McElrathbey's case.
Bowden was asked two pointed questions Monday: Was McElrathbey habitually late to team functions, and did McElrathbey have the option to return to the team on scholarship next fall? Read more

McElrathbey shifts field, leaves Tigers
“But if that is what he has got in mind, you have to go with your heart. You can't fault a guy for wanting to play.”
CLEMSON -- There have been times Clemson running back Ray Ray McElrathbey resented that his celebrity had nothing to do with his football career.
Sensing the latter was traveling down a dead-end, McElrathbey has decided to pursue another route.
McElrathbey has left the Tigers, the school announced Saturday.
The rising redshirt sophomore is scheduled to graduate in August, at which time he plans to either enroll in Clemson's graduate school or transfer to play elsewhere.
Running back James Davis, a fellow Atlanta native and close friend, believes McElrathbey is leaning toward playing elsewhere based on their conversations. Read more
