Sun sets on Terps' tough season
The sun fell beneath the horizon Saturday in College Park, and any number of things might have reached their conclusion.

Russell Wilson threw three touchdowns and ran for another, and North Carolina State snapped a four-game losing streak by holding off Maryland 38-31 on Saturday.
Terrapins' secondary is a primary concern
In what at the time seemed like a few minutes, Wake Forest rolled up 35 points in the first half Saturday against a shredded Maryland defense.
Maryland's Chism provides big 'boost'
Cameron Chism knew it was coming. As a first-time starting cornerback when Maryland played Middle Tennessee three weeks ago, the sophomore was easy to spot.
Questions about age getting old for Terps
The Maryland football team passed the quarter pole of its season last week. Not much has changed since they left the starting line.

Terrapins' Defense Better, but Not Good Enough
For three quarters, Maryland cornerback Cameron Chism played well enough to deter Middle Tennessee quarterback Dwight Dasher from picking on him too often. Chism had made tackles and deflected passes all afternoon; the sophomore even recorded a pair of interceptions in his first career start.
But as the fourth quarter wore on, Chism could feel his muscles fatigue. The tinge that lit up the back of his leg every time he made a stride intensified. His hamstring wasn't pulled, he said. It was pulling. Dasher seemed to sense it, too.

Hard Truth For Terps: No Easy Contests
Maryland will take the Byrd Stadium field on Saturday looking to avenge a loss from last season. The Terrapins will enter with concerns about how they will contain an athletic dual-threat quarterback and attack a defense that features impressive overall speed.
Maryland's opponent, however, is not an ACC school or a high-profile nonconference foe, but instead a Middle Tennessee team that won all of five games last season with one of the nation's youngest rosters.
For the Terrapins, this is the new normal. A program that realistically chased ACC titles and top 25 rankings earlier this decade is now relegated to playing what is considered an almost evenly matched contest against a team not even expected to challenge for the Sun Belt Conference title.

Terrapins' Defense Looks for Positives
Maryland defensive lineman Jared Harrell sat at a table this week and talked about three-and-outs and overtime stops, grasping for any signs of defensive improvement to come out of Saturday's 38-35 overtime victory over James Madison.
Despite an underwhelming start to the season -- Maryland ranks 108th in the country in total defense after two games, having surrendered an average of 479.5 yards per game -- the Terrapins' defensive players are making their best effort to remain optimistic, even as they brace for another formidable challenge. One week after struggling mightily against the run-oriented spread offense of the division I-AA Dukes, Maryland will face a similar spread attack with a different emphasis -- passing -- when it hosts Middle Tennessee on Saturday.
Terps want a win, not revenge, in Saturday's rematch against Middle Tennessee State
Under normal circumstances, Maryland would probably treat Saturday's game against Middle Tennessee State as a revenge match.
Carroll's injury could leave a big hole
On Sunday afternoon, coach Ralph Friedgen described the play that cost him his star cornerback.
The characters pierce through the red screen. It's a simple, conventional font, centered directly on the bright red background.
To a man, the Maryland defense knows a sliver of trivia usually reserved for extremely devoted fans or stat-obsessed observers.
The signature play of the 2008 Terrapin football season had everything. There was a teeth-rattling hit, a swagger-filled celebration and a momentum boost that keyed an upset win - plus the loss of bodily fluids.

Terrapins new 'D' has county flavor
Riverdale Baptist grad Travis Ivey and the rest of the University of Maryland defensive linemen wait to have their photos taken during the team's media day on Monday at Byrd Stadium.
