The first round of the draft Thursday night ended with the NBA champion Celtics selecting New Mexico senior guard J.R. Giddens at No. 30. Giddens, who played two years at Kansas before transferring, averaged 16.3 points and 3.1 assists last season. He was co-player of the year in the Mountain West Conference.
His potential was evident early. As a freshman with the Jayhawks, he was honorable mention All-Big 12. Giddens, 6 feet 5, is primarily a shooting guard and can play small forward, where the Celtics are pretty rich. They appear to have a need for a backup point guard. Mario Chalmers, the most outstanding player of the Final Four, was second in the Big 12 with 4.3 assists. And he averaged 12.2 points in his Kansas career. But Celtics brass, especially director of basketball operations Danny Ainge, liked Giddens, who worked out for the team Wednesday. 'Danny's been watching this guy for a long time and he's really liked him - long, athletic, he can defend. I think he has a chance to play for us. He fits what we're looking for,' Celtics coach Doc Rivers said on ESPN's draft show. Chalmers went 34th to Minnesota, which traded him to Miami. Giddens has been in trouble off the court, getting into an offseason fight at a Lawrence, Kan., bar in 2005. Giddens was stabbed in his right calf requiring 30 stitches. That and other issues led to his departure from Kansas. He had an attitude problem with the Lobos, too, and was suspended in February of his junior season. Rivers was well aware of that background.

After making the long shot, Mario Chalmers never figured he'd turn into a long shot.
But there was the Kansas point guard, drifting through the entire first round of the NBA Draft on Thursday before the Heat rescued him by trading for the fourth pick of the second round.
Now the defensive stopper is ready to go on the offensive.
'It was a little disappointing,' the cousin of NBA veterans Lionel Chalmers and Chris Smith said Friday. 'It was a little shock.'
