Should Mexico mess with corn genes?

Full story: CNN

Mexico saw the first public protests this weekend over the government's decision to allow cultivation of the first genetically modified corn, which environmentalists and others say could ruin the nation's native crop.

"Sin maiz, no hay pais."

Transgenetic corn ( frankenfoodz R us) has already contaminated native corn crops which there are over 40 varieties. This 'patented' corn also kills migrating Monarch Butterflies.

NO MAS~

These are seeds of destruction.

Yes let us stop the horrible process that allows us to grow more food per acre. It's horrendous that we should want to grow corn to feed more people. We should defiantly go back to hunting and gathering, that would be much better, just don't look at all of the people that would starve to death.

Really? that's what you people believe. Higher crop yields are good. All corn is genetically modified, all of it. Humans have been modifying crops since we came up with the idea of agriculture, we have just made it more efficient that is all. Stop the fear mongering and actually learn a little about science and the history of agriculture.

science does not back you up. Your own links clearly show it is more about political and economic ideology then about anything else. If you have different political views, that is fine. What is not fine is hiding those views behind other issues. That is what Greenpeace does, it is an anti-capitalist organization, that is why the co-founder quit.

Cows are not people. I don't know how I can be more clear then that, they are simply not people. Humans are also the only mammals with the ability for abstract thought, to create science, art, beauty, and everything else that you and I both use every day. does that make it bad? By the logic of that video anything that we do that other mammals don't do is a bad thing. All of that is based purely on emotion, not on reason (another thing we humans do). Should we all live like other mammals, give up reason, logic, and higher thought because other mammals don't do it? Should we go back to living the the wild with no tools, no language? Is that what you are after? Other mammals will eat their own young, so we should too, right?

I'm not so sure genetically modified foods are nutritionally sound. Take aspartame, which is a chemically modified substance. We were told it's good for you because "it's only a backwards sugar molecule." Years later after approval we found out how very unsound it is for your body.

Manually engineering crops never meant taking DNA from entirely different plants or animals and inserting them into a particular food.

The specter of unintended consequences from these artificial combinations is now clear - harm to animals in the ecosystem and new, invasive hybrids run amok.

These traditional methods were and never could be designed to prevent replanting from one year's crop. Agribusiness wants farmers to be hostage to buying new, engineered seeds each planting season.

Plus, all our food will now be controlled by a handful of patent holders.

You couldn't dream up such a diabolical, cynical scheme as this. Yet some sick industrialist did.

Oh, and the need for higher crop yields is a human population issue. The higher crop yields cannot automatically, without discussion, trump sustainability issues such as water resources, depleting the soil of nutrients, denuding other growing things which preserve topsoil, or the excess of fossil fuels required for corporate agriculture. It's clearly a sh-tstorm to profit a very few even without reaching the usual, frankenstein fears of genetic modification.

Kissenger once said, "If you control food, you control people". This 'other God' they are making in the food patents for profit freaks of Nature in order to 'control' the market. Reagan era deregulation made food far more unsafe today then ever before in history.
The political arena's and financial arena's in 1978 'merged'. This isnt capitalism anymore. Its Corporate Sociolism. Big AG business attempting to monopolize food production.

First Shots Fired in Second American Revolution

Using their own acquiesence in addressing human waste in developing Nations being used to fertilize food that is then brought back to America as well as the use of Pesticides outlawed in America, yet the big ag. business's do use them in other countries where then the food comes back to America and in our food supply, the Dept of Agriculture and FDA have literally caved to corporate interests in lieu of food safety. They seek to use their own miserable failures as a pretext to go to war on the source of true nutrition by comparison, and control of co op organic farms and gardens. CONTROL> they are paying huge amounts of money to buy up heirloom seed companies so they can then 'patent' those seeds genetic code and eliminate them from the dinner table without their approval.

The corn or the aspartame? If it's the corn I would not even feed it to cattle. All we need is 1/4 ton plus animals hallucinating.

Well good luck trying to feed the earth's human population WITHOUT genetically modified crops.

There's already WAY TOO MANY people for that!
