I have to agree with this article -- after visiting Haworth, I'm not surprised it inspired her work. It might just be the most depressing place I've ever seen. The moors, the overflowing cemetery creeping onto the steps of the parsonage, the couch where Emily Bronte died, refusing to get up or even admit she was ill...
Not to mention the town itself, where in the 1850s the average life expectancy was somewhere in the mid 20s and the sewage flowed into the streets. |

I tend to agree. Though I can entirely appreciate the intense emotions their books present, they tend to be a little too tortured for my taste. |
