Film review: A Most Wanted Man
An antidote to far-fetched spy fare like the James Bond and Jason Bourne sagas, this gritty, downbeat espionage drama is shot through with realism - from Hoffman's grizzled, world-weary appearance to the film's dour tone The 'most wanted man' of the title is Issa Karpov - a half-Russian, half-Chechen suspected jihadist in Hamburg illegally to claim his father's ill-gotten fortune and a better life. But this is post-9/11 Germany and the country is on high alert.

Spike Buys Illegal Online Marketplace Drama From Tony Krantz & Gary Oldman
Urbanski's Flying Studio Pictures. Written/executive produced by Scott Gold , the project, which I hear has a significant penalty attached to it, is inspired by TIME Magazine's 2013 cover story on the Silk Road online marketplace.

Review: The Drop
Dennis Lehane knows how to tell a crime story. His best-selling novels include Mystic River and Gone, Baby, Gone , both of which found bigger audiences and won multiple awards in their feature film adaptations.

Why Tom Hardy Will Probably Never Make Another Romantic Comedy Again
Tom Hardy is best known for his serious work, be it turning up the drama in features like Warrior and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy or just turning into a full-blown monster, as seen in movies like Bronson and The Dark Knight Rises . That said, two years ago he decided to branch out with a bit of lighter fare and tried doing a romantic comedy.
'The Drop' Movie Review
"We're all dead men walking. We just don't know it yet." That and many other prophetic lines come from the late James Gandolfini .

They Saw it Coming -- When Writers are Right
I like to divide prophets and futurists into two groups. The first is those who are simply mad and without conscious thoughts report what they perceive and interpret about worlds seen and unseen, usually with a hearty dash of paranoia or megalomania.

Jacob Tomuri: Double take
Stuntman and actor Jacob Tomuri is riding a Hollywood high. He'd like to stick to acting but his stunt work as Tom Hardy's double keeps him ultra-busy, writes Veronica Schmidt.

Reviews For The Easily Distracted: The Drop
Is This Set In Boston Like Every Other Dennis Lehane Story? No, Brooklyn. Maybe Gandolfini couldn't do a Southie accent.
'The Drop': A masterpiece of tension
Getting close to two decades ago, Alec Baldwin starred in an adaptation of "Heaven's Prisoners," second in James Lee Burke's atmosphere-laden series of Dave Robicheaux novels. The film is just this side of brilliant, with director Phil Joanou and scripters Harley Peyton and Scott Frank unerringly catching the rhythm and cadence of Burke's prose, while Baldwin delivers what remains one of his best-ever performances as the recovering alcoholic, ex-New Orleans cop struggling to endure as he gets pulled into a particularly seamy investigation.

'The Drop' review: James Gandolfini and Tom Hardy sizzle in Brooklyn crime drama
James Gandolfini's final performance is reason enough to see "The Drop," a crime thriller written by Dennis Lehane and set in Brooklyn, not Lehane's usual gritty backstreets of Boston. Gandolfini is vulnerable and haunted as Cousin Marv, a bar owner in too deep with Chechen mobsters, a role that recalls his glory on "The Sopranos" without mimicking it.

DOGS! What's better than dogs? Nothing! Dogs are the greatest creatures that have ever existed or will ever exist on this planet. All movies should feature dogs - or, barring multiple dogs, at least one dog, provided that dog is suitably great.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) Review
In the bleak days of the Cold War, espionage veteran George Smiley is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within MI6's echelons. Two of the most striking aspects of Thomas Alfredson's comma-deficient Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy are the splendid cast - of which more later - and the frantic pace of the thing.

In September 1933, General George S. Patton told the Calvary Journal , "Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men." Mathematician Alan Turning proved Patton's statement was only half true when it came to World War II.

Review and trailer: A Most Wanted Man (15) - Hoffman bows out in a stylish spy thriller
This is his final leading role and when he walks out of frame in the film's touching final shot it feels like it is the actor, not the character, who is leaving the stage. He is magnificent here as a dishevelled German spy tasked with capturing Islamist terrorists in a very gloomy Hamburg.

Review: The November Man
It was in 2002 that the spy trade became a young man's game. While Pierce Brosnan was making his final appearance as James Bond in the roundly, soundly ridiculed Die Another Day , Vin Diesel came roaring to the front with xXx and Matt Damon did even better by kicking off the successful Jason Bourne franchise with The Bourne Identity .
