A David-and-Goliath standoff between a tiny school district and the state over education dollars has come to a bitter end -- although in this instance, Goliath won.

This week, the Wimberley school board reversed course and agreed to begin payment on roughly $2.3 million that state officials say the school district owes under the share-the-wealth school finance system. The vote was Tuesday night in favor of paying the state.

Wimberley trustees had voted four months ago to withhold payment, arguing that the district didn't have the money and that the charges were unfair. But facing a threat from the Texas Education Agency that the 2,000-student district would be dissolved and consolidated into another district, the Wimberley board relented and directed staff to make the first payment of $349,422.
