'Superstar' Doesn't Age Well In Tired Production
Christ, is he old.
Ted Neeley has played the title character in 'Jesus Christ Superstar' since its Broadway run in the early '70s (as well as the 1973 film version). At 64, he is still donning the holy robes in a non-Equity show that opened Tuesday at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford.
But it would take a special kind of savior to redeem this tired, uninspired show covered by the shroud of touring.
Needed is youth.
That's why the show was such a sensation in its time, breaking the mold of how a musical is developed (it started with a 'concept' album), what it should look and sound like and how it dared to reinterpret the 'Greatest Story Ever Told' for a generation hungry to change the world. Read more

Ted Neeley returns to the title role in the touring production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar,' which arrives at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford Tuesday for a one-week run.
Neeley played the part in the 1971 Broadway musical, in the 1973 Norman Jewison film and in subsequent tours. Turning 65 in September, Neeley is nearly twice as old as Jesus Christ was when he died. In a phone interview while on a tour stop in Paducah, Ky., Neeley shared his thoughts on an aging Christ, spirituality and those pearly gates. Read more
