Mizzima News: Landmines still extensively used in Karen State
In the eight months from August 2012 to March 2013, at least nine people were killed and at least nine injured by landmines in Karen [Kayin] State in eastern Myanmar, according to the Karen Human Rights Group .
The Greater Mekong Subregion is expected to need an additional US$9 billion to achieve full-fledged economic corridors spanning the six GMS countries, says the government's planning unit.
Landmines are concentrated around Burma's borders with Bangladesh and Thailand, but are a particular threat in Kachine State and the eastern parts of the country, after decades of wars with ethnic minorities.
