Friday Shooting Was Hartford's 14th Homicide Of Year

Hartford police are investigating two Friday night shootings, one of which ended the life of a man on his 21st birthday. Police said officers were called to 159 Edgewood St. about 10 p.m. for a report of a shooting and found two men next to a car. They had been shot several times. One of the men, Anthony Alexander, of 346 Capen St., was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, police said. A woman at the scene Saturday said Alexander was sitting inside his car when he was shot, not far from his family's home. Alexander's death was the 14th homicide in Hartford this year. A small wooden shrine with candles around it was set up on Saturday afternoon at the site of the shooting. The other man, Daniel Edmonson, 29, of 161 Edgewood St., was treated at St. Francis for wounds that were not considered life-threatening, police said.

So..now that we know the touchy feely event in Bushnell Park will not work; What do we do now to decrease the violence?

How about a serious crackdown on all crime; from jaywalking to muggings to murder.

How about more police and less restrictions on them.

How about getting rid of these no talent clowns in the mayors office; including the mayor himself and replacing them with public servants who wish to serve the city and not themselves.

this was a well written and informative article. a major improvement over the usual poorly written courant stories.
of course the subject, yet another murder and more shootings, is all to predictable for hartford. good thing that crime is down according to the mayor. otherwise there would be people being shot.
realistically though the hartford surge (12 troopers) does not appear to be working. ha ha.

My thoughts exactly but I will go a few steps further.

A lot of the violent crime in Hartford is due to the breakdown of the traditional family unit.

Remove the financial incentives - e.g. welfare and other government services - and force these people to leave the state for a more lucrative handout.

Additonally, pursue deadbeat dads with financial and criminal penalties. Castrate, if warranted.

IT's THE GANGS! WHEN WILL HARTFORD AND THE FEDS DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS? IT'S INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL ORGANIZATIONS, NOT JUST NEIGHBORHOOD VIOLENCE AT WORK HERE. CANDLELIGHT VIGILS ARE NICE, BUT WHERE IS FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT?

Are these killings really necessary? How much more does a man become when he carries a gun? Add in alcohol, drugs, peer pressure and, well, just about any other negative stimulant available to them, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Why do people feel compelled to do these incomprehensible and senseless acts of stupidity? Who's teaching them to act this way? At what point did society fail them? At what point in a troubled youth's life should there be an intervention? Before it happens? When a child starts to become distant or detached from his immediate family?...

I guess rather than needlessly vent this morning, I'm just trying to comprehend how some people are driven to behave the way they do when they're around certain individuals.

Unfortunately, this is a riddle that apparently may never be solved.

Well I see bringing in the State Police was a wonderful idea......shootings have really ceased. Just face it, Hartford is beyond help. Build a wall around the city and let them kill each other.
Funny you should say that. I left West Hartford about 5 years ago because I was sick of the yuppy snobbery. I'm living in Hartford now. I say put a wall up around my city so you suburban fools can't make your drive-through drug buys. That's all it would take to 'clean up' the city.

I share the same concerns as you. I believe Hartford has decent, moral people living in that town. The problem is the fatherless thugs that are reeking havoc in their neighborhoods. There needs to be a severe crackdown on gangs, thugs and drug dealers. This can only happen if the police are given some leeway to do their jobs. If I were a Hartford police officer I too would be fearful of performing my job to the best of my abilities because I could be accused of racism, and brutality. And the no spine leadership at city hall, succumbs to the pressures of the likes of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, and never backs these officers. So why should they go out there and risk their lives? The city and neighbor hoods are being run by gangs at the behest of the decent people that live in those neighborhoods. Then again why am I surprised after all city hall is run by gangs!

You're viewing it from the standpoint of people that live in a civilized society and were raised in a normal environment with parents that cared.
They don't have parents that care. They're lucky to know one of their parents. Their friends are all the same (have parents that don't care). Most have fathers in prison so they're proud and boastful of them instead of being ashamed. Their idea of competition isn't to get a better job. It's to rule a street. Their idea of conflict isn't calling the police or getting lawyer. It's pulling out a gun and blasting away. Their idea of fun isn't going on vacation or to a ball game. It's ripping off other dealers or stealing from others.

You can't help those that don't want to be helped and don't think they need to be. It's a waste of time, money and effort.

The police should continue to do what they do: try and protect the innocent and let the others kill each other off. Personally I don't care if the homicide rate is up as long as most or all of it is just criminals taking their like. Out of all the killings and shootings this year, I'll bet few if any were against innocent people. I'll bet this guy wasn't one of them either.

Hartford can never change around it's image until someone gets control of these people. Every day we read of violence in Hartford as Perez leaves his head in the sand and warm-fuzzy wanna-be's make excuses for these peoples behaviors.

No more excuses. No more explanations as to why this happened.

Hartford should be under Martial Law and all gangs and drug dealers/users should be put on notice that any and all illegal activity on their part will be construed as an act of war and that deadly force will be used against them.

Then, carry this out all summer, and into the winter. Lose a few gang bangers, so what? They are nothing but a scourge on society anyway. You will have Hartford cleaned up before the next president takes office.

Stay in your little bubble and everyone will be happy! As evidenced by your comment, you (and all the other Hartford citizens) seem content to accept this behavior and "lifestyle" as a daily occurrence. Meanwhile, the "civilized world" scorns and abandons you. You city will fall further and further behind in education and employment. What will you do then? Who will support you and your peers? Will you join the throngs of criminals to rob and attack others for food and money or will you wisen up and take a stand for "what you beleive in?".

I do agree with some of the points by "Hartford Resident" and "Shoreliner", except for the "Additonally, pursue deadbeat dads with financial and criminal penalties. Castrate, if warranted." This has nothing to do with "deadbeat dads" (that's another subject).

This is about the SOCIETY we are now living in. LACK OF RESPECT by these young people, just a LACK OF RESPECT FOR THEMSELVES. These young people don't care, so in retrospect when you have people who don't give a damn, well the end result is, KILL OR BE KILLED, that is what I am gathering with the violence we are facing with these young people today.

TO THE COMMUNITY IN THE NORTH END OF HARTFORD, "HERE IS A FOOD FOR THOUGHT", The only way the STATE and LOCAL POLICE are able to help is, IF THE COMMUNITY ON EVERY BLOCK OF HARTFORD MAKE A COMMITTMENT TO HELP AND GO AGAINST THE NO SNITCHING RULE AND TELL ON THESE HOULIGANS WHO ARE CONSTANTLY BRINGING HEARTACHE TO FAMILIES. IT'S A TRAVISTY. THE COMMUNITY ARE ENABLING THESE YOUNG HOULIGANS WHO THINK THEY OWN THE STREETS. The devil has his advocates and they are the ones who are committed the crimes.

That Sham of a CANDLE LIGHT LAST MONDAY NIGHT WAS A TRAVISTY TO EVERY CITIZEN WHO DID NOT KNOW THERE WAS A MARCH at Bushnell Park. To me it was a POLITICAL move and NOT one PERson who lost their family member was invited. So that should say something about the people who run the City. It was a Photo Op session. PEOPLE OF HARTFORD STOP TALKING AND SHOW ACTION, GO OUT AN VOTE WHEN IT'S ELECTION TIME. YOU'll face the same problems with the same people who run the city, if you do not vote.

The cops should PULL OVER EVERY DARK TINTED WINDOW DRIVEN VEHICLE" I see many of those hoodlums in those dark tinted cars. No pun intended for the legal people, but hey its time to clean up by any means necessary and we need to start talking. I am tired of hearing the news every weekend about a young person being shot and killed. Every mother has to worry every day and moreso every weekend!!! I am mad and upset with these young JERKS who think they own this city and they dont!!!!!!! BRING BACK THE CAPITOL PUNISHMENT YOU KILL YOU DIE BY THE CHAIR OR BY LETHAL INJECTION. Don't waste our tax paying dollars and feed them - take them straight to the chamber. I bet you crime will go down!!!!!

Perhaps the new and improved Solidos (formerly the Ghetto Brothers and Eddie's old pals) will give out a prize in the end. Right now, Hartford is in the final heat and deadlocked with New Orleans, Detroit and the entire tri-city area of Jersey!
