Does anyone know if there is any additive you could put in the laundry water that would take the brown out or keep it from staining your clothes...? If I did a load of whites and added bleach to the laundry would it prevent the staining?

Oxalic acid will take out the brown iron stains - try Zud cleanser.

Of course the person who hit the hydrant will never have to pay for any of this - the hydrant was at fault.

There is a product called CLR (stands for calcium, rust, lyme) that should work.
