Cops: Killer planned a rampage

Thanks, SPG. This is the first layer of the onion. I want to know so much more. I want to know Gaustad's history beyond his age, race, and fact that he was a churchy fella. Of course he was enraged, scared, probably humiliated, and desparate. I'd like to know more about Gaustad's personal history up to and after his first meeting with the girl. Hindsight is so much clearer, and I bet that there were hints all along that Corey was not a stable guy, likely long before he ever met her. I think it's important to learn from this so we are beter able to recognize human pressure cookers before they explode and take others down in their rage. I don't see why that opinion rates clueless.  (1 hr ago | post #50)

Cops: Killer planned a rampage

My interest may seem morbid, but I am interested in the WHY, in the WHAT went wrong, in the HOW did this happen. Remember, no behavior happens in a vacuum. There is always a backstory, something that may help us understand what led up the the crime. Trying to comprehend the entire story, not just the final act, I think is critical to preventing such things from happening in the future. Along with this understanding, I believe in harsher punishments than what our violent criminals are now handed, but that's fodder for another thread.  (Yesterday | post #23)

Peterson on tape: 'I just stabbed him out of nowhere'

Brother, I'm neither Scandinavian nor Black but I do have a little theory about this case. I believe that Adam had been spiraling into mental illness over the last few years, culminating in the stabbing for "no reason" as he himself first stated. I believe he later came up with the "for money" part of the story to make some kind of sense of his senseless crime. Mental illness has such a stigma on it that Adam's way of dealing with what he had done was to convince himself it was for money. Just speculation, of course, but that is my perfectly color-neutral instinct on the case.  (Yesterday | post #15)

Carla Poole gets 40 years in murder of boy. 4

I understand completely. When I saw Demond's beautiful face in the paper, I too was sickened with grief over a child I never knew. If ever there was a person that the Death Penalty was meant for, it was Poole.  (Yesterday | post #79)

Carla Poole gets 40 years in murder of boy. 4

I'm so sorry for your personal unhappiness which compels you to try and make others as miserable as you. I do not think Laura needs to go to LaLa Land or anywhere else, but I would suggest a kindergarten refresher for you. That's where most of us began learning about respect for others. Does Carla Poole's atrocious crime give you a free pass on manners? LaLa Land, indeed!  (Yesterday | post #78)

St. Paul / Boyfriend's blow blamed for stroke

Kari, am I understanding this right, that Kevin is your teenage daughter's father? It's difficult to comprehend the situation beyond the few paragraphs we read here. I know that there are many 'victims' in this, of course your daughter is one. She is old enough to feel the sting when someone insults her father. What I don't understand is, how could your daughter be repeatedly exposed to such illegal and immoral behavior? On one hand I truly commend your defense of Kevin, but on the other hand I have to ask you, as a mother, how could you forgive Kevin for his staying with someone known to be abusive to his kid? By everyone's accounts here, Sherri was unkind and downright mean-spirited to almost everyone she encountered. I don't believe I'd allow my daughter anywhere near that kind of household. I believe that I would tell her father that until he's in a safer, more nurturing environment, that "our" daughter is not going to be exposed to his unmanageable problems. I feel for your kid, I really do. Do you see my point? Zen  (Friday | post #160)

Arrest made in New Brighton shooting

I find myself for the first time ever considering the other side of the ban on guns. I wonder, would the guy have done that if he thought maybe the mother was armed herself? I've always been against guns, thinking that only criminals needed them. My opinion is changing.  (Friday | post #9)

Tom Powers: Brett Favre liar, now traitor? Green Bay Packers GM...

I've never been a football fan, but I've always been a Brett Favre fan. Over the years, he's carried himself with dignity, representing the sport with class and grace the way a true sportsman does. We've never heard anything negative about this man, he's golden. He's been able to rally his team and his state in a way that most other athletes do not. I personally feel that any team Mr. Favre plays for is better for having him, and the fans are better for having a truly 'good guy' as a sports hero.  (Friday | post #29)

Honor system fails as free life jackets vanish

Rita: Glad to see you posting again! It's funny how 'free for your use' can mean completely different things to people in different situations. It is a shame that someone stole those life jackets. Especially in light of the drownings we've been reading so much of around here this summer. JTY: Not that it shouldn't, I just missed the transition and thought the stories/headlines may have gotten mixed up again. My bad, it's just me that's mixed up.  (Friday | post #50)

Proposed George W. Bush Sewage Plant makes ballot

Aw, don't take it so personally, Tom. You know, the sewage plant workers are every bit as American as the rest of us. They work hard and do a great public service. Why not name the plant after a president? And remember, just because a committee in a city names a building this or that, doesn't mean the entire town hates America. I'm proof that it's possible to feel one way about an elected leader and quite another way about my beloved country. I love America, I do not love Bush.  (Friday | post #14)
