76 Year Old Veteran Arrested for Asking Public Official t...

That's what I mean by poor discretion on the crowds part. In the tape you can clearly see, as you described, Broyles getting pissed about all of the verbal and nonverbal pot shots. Broyles made no effort to conceal his frustration given his waving of the pen and tone of voice. With all this Overholt had to, within seconds of Broyles finishing, throw on his ten cents worth. I'm sorry, even I could tell that it was about to get real if one more person spoke out. The public had no discretion and, innocent or not, Overholt bore the brunt of it. So maybe his fellow citizens, mainly the cackling women, should bare some responsibility for their lack of discretion. As far as poor behavior by the police, on the film, they weren't there to ask him to dance they were asking him to leave which does require some persuasion of who is in control. He wasn't brutalized. He knew why he was being approached and should scooted ass just as soon as they came his way. The meeting wasn't about life and death and wasn't worth the level opposition shown. Again this is more about seeing how much a thorn in the side one can be due to old grudges than the river or real brutality. Nobody truly gets the hell beat out of them by cops then makes a face book entry on it. Maybe he should have done a selfie and location update while it was happening. This more of a soap opera than anything, I'm out.  (Jul 22, 2014 | post #173)

That's the answer I expected. In a nutshell there is such bitterness for a local government that has no ability to bring back the good old days and maybe didn't care so long they could preserve themselves. Nobody native has the resources and or ambition to change anything and great resent is shown to "outsiders, foreigners, carpet baggers, and Yankees" but we want them to fix everything. It may be deep but it's at the foundation of what's blown this way out of proportion.  (Jul 22, 2014 | post #166)

I agree with being suspicious of the crowds motive. Most everyone is crying foul over having freedom of speech taken from them. Well there is something called discretion that goes with it. The crowd had to interrupt with applause, some woman barks out an un orderly response to a question she wasn't asked, the "victim" hovered over the table to hear a conversation not even pertinent to his input or anyone else's, and right after the mayor told everyone to keep quiet the "victim" just had to speak out and when asked to leave he DID KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS INSTEAD OF SHUTTING THE HOLE UNDER HIS NOSE!!! Yes, the Mayor did handle the situation like an entitled bumpkin politician but I think the the crowd could have cared less about the meeting and was just looking for a "dramatic moment".  (Jul 22, 2014 | post #164)

Well, tobaccos contribution to disease has made it a political taboo so the market is reserved for a select few and Magnavox took a dump on you in favor of paying a Chinaman pennies to do the same job. You don't like "carpet baggers" moving in on your turf. The question still stands. If power were in your hands, what would you do to fix it???  (Jul 22, 2014 | post #160)

Hypothetical question. We will pretend all of the so called "Gestapo " "Nazis" "Good old boys" etc.... say to themselves "you know, I think everyone who has posted on this topic is right" and turn power over to you. Besides growing tobacco and putting TV sets together, how are you going to fix it?  (Jul 22, 2014 | post #154)

I'm sure it was and it is good to remember it fondly. Unfortunately that is a closed chapter. I think this is the root of the subject at hand given that fact a true resent has been built against leadership for their inability to bring back the good old days and a resent for outside influences. This mindset is the greater part of the bickering and accusing we saw in this meeting. The next generation will either take note and change course or leave this place to become a ghost town.  (Jul 21, 2014 | post #81)

I saw the video of the meeting in its entirety and I call BS. The whole thing started to spiral because of a lack of discretion on the publics part i.e. sharp interruptions, laughter, applause, and cackling. It was clear that many who attended were there just to find opportunity to criticize and disrespect. I think this place is still hung up on wanting to grow tobacco and build televisions.  (Jul 21, 2014 | post #68)

How about we go to work. That's usually what most credible people are doing at 8 am unless your retired.  (Jul 20, 2014 | post #24)

I agree with you. I don't think the majority of those speaking out really care about an elderly person getting locked up, they just want an opportunity take pot shots on old grudges  (Jul 20, 2014 | post #23)

I'm sorry, I can't make a judgement off of a Facebook entry. I can clearly see that those with stock in this situation will make themselves out to be a saint on either side. With an unbiased point of view I can see that this situation makes the natives of Greene County look like a chimp colony to those seeing it from the outside.  (Jul 20, 2014 | post #19)

I totally agree. It's a whole different subject but being a veteran doesn't make you credible.  (Jul 20, 2014 | post #14)

OK, I will judge it. The video starts at the tale end of some sort of applause by the public with the mayor immediately warning the public that they will be removed upon further "outburst ". In the middle of his warning you have further laughter and cacklng. Then the "victim" immediately has to butt right in with a blunt request for them to speak up. The mayor was obviously already on edge for some reason and fired back with the demand of his removal (not arrest). Instead of quietly complying the "victim" started the usual array of rebellious questions that would agitate an officer instead. My judgement, all I see is a bunch of bumpkin politicians trying to cling to an old regime and a bunch of citizens who's knowledge of the subject at hand doesn't go beyond news articles and Wikipedia entries.  (Jul 20, 2014 | post #10)
