Carter: States should decide same-sex marriage issue

I don't understand why this is such a difficult concept. Civil marriage is a human right. Churches are not required to perform any religious ceremonies they disagree with and the law should never require it. But just because a church doesn't want you to get married in their facilities doesn't mean you can't get married somewhere else. The church does not own marriage - marriage existed before any current religions developed.  (Oct 27, 2014 | post #16)

Gay marriage wins, but Maryland's same-sex domestic partn...

If the state offered domestic partnerships to both gay and straight couples, then left the benefits for straight couples then this would be an issue. But the state is right in this case. We fought for - and won - the right to marriage in the state, eligible for all of the benefits the state offers to married couples. Benefits for domestic partners was a bandaid fix, but it is no longer needed. With marriage legal, keeping the benefit exclusively for gay domestic partners becomes a special right and needs to be ended. If you want the benefit, get married - the same as any straight couple would have to.  (May 14, 2013 | post #3)

University alters gay dress code

The headline may be poorly written, but that's the publication and not the school. Kudos to the university for their positive response.  (Jul 29, 2012 | post #11)

Gay Activists Flip Off Ronald Reagan Portrait At White Ho...

I'm gay and offended by their behavior - it's childish and immature. There's no reason for it and only makes them look foolish. It damages our cause because too many people still view us as a single group and not individuals. I don't agree with everything every president has done - including those I support. I don't expect everyone to agree with everything done. But that is no reason to resort to name calling or personal attacks. I've had many discussions with friends I disagreed with - I'm not trying to change their mind, I just want them to have a debate in adult terms without resorting to childish methods. And giving Reagan the finger is childish.  (Jun 24, 2012 | post #2)

Toronto Father "Shocked" by School's Progressive Planner

The only one I question for younger school kids is the one with reference to sex workers. As an adult I feel uncomfortable with the reference to prostitution and the questions that would bring up. But it's great about the other days.  (Sep 22, 2011 | post #2)

Influential Head of Gay Rights Lobby Resigns

No loss. Hope we get someone who isn't a political ass-kisser. We need someone more like Get Equal who will be vocal, demanding, and in their face. Then maybe I'll support HRC, because I certainly won't now. (BTW, why are they wasting so much donated money on a magazine that serves little purpose except for patting themselves on the back. Wouldn't that money be better spent for aggressive lobbying purposes?)  (Aug 28, 2011 | post #2)

Karma returns to New Jersey bridal shop owner who turned ...

The store owner is so out of line, but I really wish people wouldn't call her names or threaten her. It just helps create a martyr complex. And there enough stupid people out there I worry some idiot will carry through with violence. That won't help us at all and can only do our community harm. Spread the word to avoid/boycott her business, but otherwise ignore this pitiful little person's existence.  (Aug 25, 2011 | post #10)

Fort Lauderdale suburb will define 'family' with gay righ...

This is a newspaper article's lead, meant to grab your attention in order to encourage you to keep reading. Of course it is dramatic and inflammatory. I repeat - this was not the INTENT of the law. It was not aimed at gay familiesWhich was my point. It's being fixed, with change instituted by the Commissioner.  (Jun 3, 2010 | post #9)

McDonald's ad featuring gay teen goes viral

I'm in favor of the word queer. It's becoming more commonly used as an inclusive term that means you don't have to label yourself as one little thing and embraces everyone in the community. Offensive? Not here, IMO. I look instead how it is intended before taking offense - and in this case I don't think any offense or criticism is intended. Personally, I'm in favor of embracing the word queer and stop all the divisive alphabet soup labeling of LGBTQ which is sure to leave someone out. (I'm sure I've forgotten some.) A word only has power if you give it power.  (Jun 3, 2010 | post #5)

McDonald's ad featuring gay teen goes viral

It's sad that the boy isn't out to his father. I would have been more impressed if he had been. As it is it's still a subliminal signal that gays should stay in the closet.  (Jun 2, 2010 | post #3)

Fort Lauderdale suburb will define 'family' with gay righ...

@No Surprise Did you read the Sun Sentinel article or did you stop with the Proud Parenting summary? Just because a law negatively impacts gay families doesn't mean it was meant to. From the article ---No city says their zoning cap laws are aimed at gay couples or families, but rather at too many people sharing space. Oakland Park is among the first to see a connection and call the law discriminatory. There is still support for its original purpose. It's meant to "prevent four families living in a three-bedroom house."---- If you haven't been here, then you don't know what you are talking about. I repeat - this is a gay-friendly area. The Vice Mayor and some of the Commissioners are openly gay - it wasn't an issue in the elections. Instead of beating the city up for poorly worded law you should be giving them credit for recognizing the problem and moving to correct it - without a lawsuit or protest. (Boca Raton is NOT Oakland Park, trust me. I'm not surprised they would have to be sued to get something like that changed.)  (Jun 2, 2010 | post #7)

Fort Lauderdale suburb will define 'family' with gay righ...

Oakland Park is a nice city and very gay-friendly. (I grew up there.) The law was written in a different time and I doubt it was ever meant as deliberate discrimination against gays. As the Sun-Sentinel article mentions, it was meant to block flop-houses, not families. @No Surprise It didn't take the ACLU to motivate Oakland Park to change; it was the commissioners themselves who saw the problem and moved to correct it. Oakland Park is next to Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale - the area is gay friendly with a high percentage of gay government officials and police. (When a guy ran on an anti-gay ticket some years ago he was trounced.)  (Jun 1, 2010 | post #5)

Protesters criticize church booting preschooler for lesbi...

I completely agree - I would never enroll my child in a religious institution to start with, but if I did I wouldn't be surprised by them enforcing their (close-minded, bigoted, hateful) rules. But if they receive any public funds, then their rules shouldn't apply. This is just a headline grabbing, non-news ploy that makes the gay community look foolish and incapable of understanding how things work. It's simple - avoid organizations that openly hate you. There are alternatives - support them.  (Mar 8, 2010 | post #21)
