The financial collapse presaged by the mortgage crisis was a direct result of the Democrats Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 that forced lenders into giving loans to un qualified borrowers. The mortgage resale as investments model worked fine for years when you actually had tight controls over who could get a mortgage loan. Then, in yet another poorly thought out stroke of social engineering genius, liberals decided the American dream of home ownership shouldn't be something you worked years, and scrimped and saved to achieve. No siree! Lets force lenders to make loans no one can afford to pay back and we at fannie mae and freddie mac will promise you mister banker to get all your money even if the loan goes bad. Clinton was no angel and I am no fan of his but he was a better than Barack on his best day.  (Dec 16, 2009 | post #245)

As unpopular as this opinion will be I feel I must point out that three decades of affirmative action have educated less capable minorities at our best universities at the expense of our best and brightest non-minority students. These affirmative "babies" are then elevated to positions of authority in universities and local, state, nation al governments (again over more qualified non minorities through yet more affirmative action). The "Peter principle" in action Has anyone considered the actual capabilities of all the cronies that Obama has elevated to Czar and advisor status? Just because you went to Harvard or Yale doesnt mean you are the best or the brightest - just that there was a minority quota to fill. If you dont believe me, I have the facts to support that a high schooler from our district, with grades and sats fully 20% lower was accepted into Brown University over other, much more qualified students. Oh yes, he played the latin minority card. My 102. average and 1460 SAt kid doesnt have a prayer though.  (Dec 16, 2009 | post #238)

Thrived" is a relative word. Surviving in Botswana is thriving. David Patterson tho well intentioned is effectively powerless and financially the state of New York is the next California. With it's insanely rich benefits for (dare I say unionized) public employees, and huge illegal populations straining the entitlement programs and hospitals, "thriving " is not an appropriate description for NY. I cannot speak to the Oranges, perhaps they are the one success story.  (Dec 16, 2009 | post #232)

What you, and many others fail to understand or appreciate, is that moderate to conservative (political parties aside) comprise the majority of people in this country. Radical leftists and liberals mostly control hollywood and as a side to that, the media in general. This means their voices and agenda drumming are loud, and persistant in those outlets because they have control. The majority has less options for getting their message and frustrations aired. Forums such as this and blogs are the few outlets the majority actually have to be heard. We are currently operating in this country under the tryanny of the minority.  (Dec 16, 2009 | post #229)

We (the tax paying public) pay for their section 8 housing, medical, aid to families with dependant children, food stamps and a whole host of other free benefits the taxpayers don't qualify for. Duh  (Dec 16, 2009 | post #223)

@ THIS Is A Racist Website... The photo of the black man is a picture of Yomi Agunbiade head of SF's Recreation and Park Department who is the topic of the article published in SFweekly - topix, is not racist though some commenters might be. Yomi Agunbiade is balck and he is incompetent. If speaking the truth is racist, we are all lost.  (Dec 16, 2009 | post #219)

'Truth commission' needed to probe torture by U.S.

It's a little known fact that Clinton refused to even allow the CIA to present daily briefings to him concerning world affairs for the first full year of his presidency. His dismantling of the nation's security departments most assuredly was instrumental in the dearth of intelligence that led to the successful terror attacks on the US. Bush inherited a devastated and demoralized national security organization. We're all lucky to be alive.  (Apr 24, 2009 | post #158)

'Truth commission' needed to probe torture by U.S.

We don't need a truth comission, prosecution or congressional hearings and any calls to do so are nothing more than a witchhunt. The current administration seems to feel it elevates it's stature buy pointing fingers at its predecessors all the while making a substantial number of missteps themselves in only 100 days. We will never know whether other methods of interrogation would have yielded equal results (either do any of the vociferous critics) and you know, I don't care. I've been safe from lawless, moralless terrorists who wouldn't hesitate to cut my head off, and you have been too - for now. National security issues shouldn't really be subject to national debate. I would never even consider second guessing a surgeon on his methods, it's not my area of expertise. The same thing applies to being a soldier. Internal departmental checks and balances, out of political limelight and gamesmanship yes. Public debate between uninformed and power hunger politicians out to feather their own nests -a travesty. Disingenuous moral indignation and monday morning quarterbacking are not productive and frankly could be dangerous for us all. Its sad but true that the world we live in needs the Jack Bauers (of 24) and I for one am glad to have them and don't wish to tie their hands with politics on such an important issue - especially with my own life hanging in the balance.  (Apr 24, 2009 | post #154)

Our favorite Italian restaurants in Suffolk

Absolutely love Uncle Joe's in the Wild by Nature shopping center (next to Boardy Barn) Montauk Highway on East Quogue/Hampton Bays border NY. Very reasonable and the food is terrific. We live in Huntington and we've been to Italy and STILL think Uncle Joe's is the best we've eaten. If you're out in the Hamptons and looking for a reasonable unpretentious place for a good meal, we highly recommend it.  (Apr 24, 2009 | post #1)

Nassau, unions to negotiate through weekend

There was a time when a decent benefit package was included to offset the meagre wages afforded by civil service work. Back then it did not include an everburgeoning pension obligation for taxpayers, 20 and out at full pay, taxpayers making up shortfall for retirement plan investment losses, sick day accruals and overtime "gaming" of the system to pump up retirement benefits, fully paid health benefits ad infinitum. I am college educated, have worked in the private sector, have 30 years experience in my industry, I'm good at my job, receive only merit based pay increases and can get fired at any time and lose my benefits, yet I make less than you all the while paying for your job and benefits with my tax dollars. I'd love to make your $85k salary, which is no chump change by the way, You've just lost perspective to what non unionized private sector folks are making and have bought into the "I deserve it" mentality that is moving this country away from capitalism as we speak. Not everyone in private industry is a Wall Street high flyer but we will all be feeding at the public trough if the attitudes don't turn back to self reliance and capitalism - with all it's flaws. If we dont, the maxim "socialism will end when you run out of other people's money" will be more than a warning and it will be too late to turn back.  (Apr 22, 2009 | post #129)
