Buffalo Diocese Announces More Parish Closings Across WNY

At least some people are concerned about the future of the DOB. If people had expressed some of their concerns in the past, maybe,we wouldn't be having this discussion now. As Karl Rahner once pointed, public opinion does have a role to play in the church.  (Jul 7, 2011 | post #41706)

Corapi was ordained bu Blessed John Paul II. Bernard McLaughlin was ordained bishop by Paul VI. What Buffalo priest was also ordained by Paul VI in 1966. Whatever became of him? Ask Msgr Gallivan.  (Jul 6, 2011 | post #41689)

The religious institute to which the former Father Corapi belonged has issued a statement deliniating his status and verifying the accustions. When will the DOB's CRB make a similar statment about David Bialokowski? After all the initial publicity some closure is necessary. And where's the DA's office about the accusation of computer hacking?  (Jul 6, 2011 | post #41688)

Other Buffalo priests implicated in the scandal: John Costello,SJ, erstwhile headmaster of Canisius HS (listed under Rocheester diocese); James Holtz, Gaylord MI diocese (son of prominent Cheektowaga Democratic politician); James Idziak, very scandalous situation (Archdiocese of Atlanta) and Paul Worczak (Diocese of Ogdensberg). I am about to lose any sympathy I ever had for Kmiec. Polonia deserves better than the closure in any fashion of Saint Adalbert's.It's about loyalty to Rome and also to the founders of Buffalo's Polish-American community, the material and financial backbone of the Diocese. When EUK's anniversary comes up, boycott it. Give him an empty cathedral.  (Jan 29, 2011 | post #36614)

Ok guys, this Lent give Kmiec and the DOB a clear message. Don't give Catholic Charities anything. eventually,Rome will get the message, that there really is something pathologically wrong in the Diocese. If they need the money, sell the Bishop's mansion. If they want the money, let them open the books, give us the names of the 53+ clergy sex abusers, and let them explain their plans for SJV/CTK. Sooner or later, it's going to have to close. Small loss, considering the quality of its graduates. Why am I so passionate on these issues? Their continued existence impedes the New Evagelization, desired by JPII and BXVI.  (Jan 28, 2011 | post #36608)

St James 's problems go back before Msgr. Berg's time. The parish was for a long time "administered " by Father Russell Liptak, a priest with manifest and longlasting psychological problems. He had been ordained, despite the fact that his seminary faculty advised aginst it,since his emotional problems were apparent then. Later he spent time in a psychiatric institution, after suffering a nervous breakdown. He eventually "took over" the parish as Msgr. Hoernschemeyer's health declined. Complaints started almost immediately to the Chancery, esp.when Liptak refued to carry out liturgical changes. He was psychologically abusive and there was at least one complain to physical abuse. Some of his bevaior in the confessional was also "weird" Eventually after 6 years of complaints, McNulty had to retire Liptak at age 51. DOB's problems did not start with EUK. They appear to be systemic.  (Jan 20, 2011 | post #36423)

Not too many. Anyway, I don't think it will be an issue in th too remote future. It looks like CTK will be going the way of the American College at Louvain.  (Jan 19, 2011 | post #36400)

I think you're right. I was looking for a bishop from the NY/NJ area. Kmiec was 2nd choice for Buffalo. Apparently, the first choice was McDonnell, had to take a see in Massachusetts, where a bishop had been removed for sexual abuse charges. Cunningham was sent to Syracuse. It was supposed to be like the musical dioccese of 1963- Buffalo-Paterson- Ogdensburg.  (Jan 19, 2011 | post #36399)

AmPol, I'd love to know what your sources of information are. I have been trying to calculate from "Hierachia Catholica",wh o it might be. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Ein Bishof von deutscher Herkunft. Das schmeckt sehr gut.  (Jan 18, 2011 | post #36391)

Soon. Maybe some of you should be dropping over to see the PNCC bishop to see,if he could help out, discetely, of course. There are some independents like Radice and Bober, who could help. Oh well. Any word on closing SJV/CTK. It could become an extension campus of Canisius.  (Jan 18, 2011 | post #36387)

I thought Fred's father was of Dutch Protestant ancestry. Anyway, I remember meeting of of his relatives and they seemed to be nice people. I agree Fred lives the Gospel and is a man of honesty and integrity, which is why he probably won't be a bishop. Nothing wrong with being a bishop's nephew. And I am sure Vatican offical got an earful about a certain bishop and his co-horts from Fred and others.  (Jan 18, 2011 | post #36386)
