Who still takes global warming seriously?

"Who still takes global warming seriously?" Answer: virtually every single climate scientist on the planet. Who opposes information about it? Answer: corporate rentboys. From Bloomberg News, 28 July: " Scientific evidence that the world is getting warmer is "unmistakable ," according to a report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration drawing on research from 48 countries, including Russia and China. " The past decade was the warmest on record and the past 50 years have been getting hotter, the researchers said, citing 10 main indicators, including surface and ocean temperatures, the amount of sea ice and glaciers and levels of humidity. "The records come from many institutions worldwide," Jane Lubchenco, NOAA administrator and undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere, said in a statement. "These independently produced lines of evidence all point to the same conclusion: Our planet is warming."  (Jul 31, 2010 | post #12603)

Mexico City Promises Argentina's First Married Gay Couple...

If the "living christ" has anything to do with the Jesus of the 4 gospels, you'll be comforted to know he said nothing at all about gay pople and their rights. Not one damned word. He also never said one word about abortion, although it was rife in the middle east in his era. Why do you religious types lie so compulsively?  (Jul 17, 2010 | post #6)

Clinton off to Afghanistan as war fears rise

When you've lost a war, it's only good sense to leave. The US lost this war at least 5 years ago. The people of Afghanistan have had 40 years of wars, civil wars and invasions. THEY'LL KEEP IT GOING FOR ANOTHER CENTURY IF NEED BE. Does anyone seriously doubt that? The US needs to get out of Afghanistan, at least be this time next year....  (Jul 17, 2010 | post #12)

Steele: Afghan war not winnable

Generally Steele's an imbecile, and he's wrong to call it "Obama's war", since funding for the war wouldn't happen without Republican support But he's right to condemn the war as folly and an unwinnable land war in Asia. Incidentally, MacArthur warned JFK very early on that going in further into VietNam would be another example of an unwinnable land war in Asia. Yeah, colonial wars haven't been on a winning streak the past sixty years or so....  (Jul 3, 2010 | post #5)

White House Still Sees July 2011 Afghan Pullout

Why wait? They need to get out now and next year is the latest they can do it. It isn't that there's any support for continuing this quagmire in NATO and very little in the US beyond the neocons and the BOMB IRAN crowd, and those people aren't going to have much influence any longer...  (Jun 20, 2010 | post #2)

Tea Partiers Want to Repeal the 17th Amendment

So some of the teabaggers are eccentric and some are loony and some like R. Paul are racist crackpots but that's all okay and just peachy because you aren't a movement, anyway? Nice avoiding responsibility there. You aren't a party because you're all the goof wing of the Republican Party, okay? Most people are catching on to that...  (May 28, 2010 | post #11)

Conservatives make changes to Texas curriculum

Correction re Thomas Jefferson via David Dayan at FireDogLake: "Among the amendments to the standard social studies textbook already approved include including discussions of Newt Gingrich and Phyllis Schlafly, a rehabilitation of Joe McCarthy, the recasting of the slave trade in softer language, and the exclusion of prominent historical figures like Thomas Jefferson. But the BoE wants more. This week, they’ll try to add a sentence alleging that separation of church and state was not the intent of the Founders. They’ll try to almost entirely excise the impact of the Progressive Era and reformers like Upton Sinclair, Susan B. Anthony, Ida B. Wells and W.E.B. DuBois...." The good news is this: The worst outcome for the textbooks would be that their standards get adopted nationwide. That’s why the work of Leland Yee out here in California is so important: Under Yee’s bill, SB1451, the California Board of Education would be required to look out for any of the Texas content as part of its standard practice of reviewing public school textbooks. The board must then report any findings to both the Legislature and the secretary of education. The bill describes the Texas curriculum changes as “a sharp departure from widely accepted historical teachings” and “a threat to the apolitical nature of public school governance and academic content standards in California.” Tom Adams, director of the state Department of Education’s standards and curriculum division, said the Texas standards could make their way into national editions of textbooks, but those aren’t used in California. “Our main concern is whether materials meet California’s standards,” he said. “There’s nothing in our review process that says we should be following Texas or anything like that.” NO WAY does this garbage get outside the borders of Texas!!!!  (May 23, 2010 | post #371)

GOP Senate nominee Rand Paul questions Civil Rights Act, ...

from today's TPMMuckraker FLASHBACK: Paul Campaign Spokesman Resigned Over Racism On Myspace Page Controversy is swirling over Rand Paul's doctrinaire libertarian take on the civil rights legislation of the 1960s. But this is not the first time the Kentucky Republican's campaign has hit a bump in racially sensitive territory. In December, Chris Hightower, the spokesman for Paul's senate campaign, was forced to resign after a liberal Kentucky blog discovered that his MySpace page had a comment posted around Martin Luther King Day that read: "HAPPY N***ER DAY!!!" above what appears to be a historical photo of the lynching of a black man. The photo and comment appeared to have been posted to Hightower's MySpace page by a friend, not by Hightower himself. The comment has since been removed but at the time it was discovered by the local blog it had been up for nearly two years. According to the Barefoot and Progressive blog, Hightower, who was also the frontman of a local Megadeth-style metal band called Commander, wrote a MySpace post referring to "Afro-America ns" titled "Blacks don't like my Napalm Death hoodie": .................. .................. .................. .................. ......... In a statement at the time of Hightower's resignation in December, the Paul campaign said: "The images were not placed there by this employee but by someone posting on the site. These images in no way represent Dr. Paul or his campaign nor do they represent the beliefs of this staff member. These images are reprehensible and have no place in civil discourse." And Paul himself said: "I have never heard a single utterance of racism from this staffer nor do I believe him to have any racist tendencies. However, it is impossible to present the ideas and reforms we need in this country with this controversy present. Therefore I have accepted his resignation."  (May 20, 2010 | post #42)
