what is a single strand of DNA

i've read about the double helix, the ladder shaped macromolecule; but i'm not clear on what constitutes a single strand of DNA; is it the ladder itself? or, is it half of the ladder? ie, a strip of 'half-rungs' plus one 'side rail'?  (Oct 24, 2011 | post #1)

the 'reading' of the genetic code by the organism

this is a quote from the wiki page on INTRODUCTION TO GENETICS; "The language used by DNA is called the genetic code, which lets organisms read the information in the genes." Q. is this an accurate or helpful way of describing what actually happens?  (Oct 24, 2011 | post #1)
