One wonders if these same christians would agree that, to be consistent with their claims of 'religious freedom', an Atheist clerk of the court should have the same right to refuse to marry two heterosexuals based on the fact that the marriage vow includes mention of a 'god' in whose existence she does not believe. She could rightfully claim that it is against her moral principles as a sworn officer of the court to LIE about the existence of an entity which she does not believe exists! After centuries of oppressing others, the christians now find it 'hateful and oppressive' that they are no longer free to force their hypocritical views on others. (Jul 20, 2015 | post #6)
No more guilty or innocent than someone who is disfellowshipped of "conduct unbecoming a Christian" by a judicial committee of elders on the evidence of two or more witnesses! (Nov 22, 2014 | post #19)
Are you going to admit that the elders should call the police as soon as such a crime is reported to THEM?! (Nov 5, 2014 | post #214)
So why don't the your elders call the police when such a crime is reported to them???! (Nov 4, 2014 | post #130)
Well, I fail to see how anyone can become a "known" predator as long as you refuse to admit any guilt on his part without at least two witnesses! He can be a 'rumored' pedophile, or a 'suspected' pedophile, but Paul says don't ADMIT any accusation without at least two witnesses. So what does that mean when a child comes forward an reports that he has been molested by Elder X? "Wait," the elders will say, "until there are reports from more children." Of course they'll have conversations with Elder X, but if he denies it, according to Paul, he will HAVE to remain in his position until there are more witness -- and MORE damaged children! That is the flaw in the Biblical reasoning. (Oct 31, 2014 | post #24)
Yet another glaring example of a so-called 'Bible principle' which is just plain WRONG. "Do not admit an accusation against an older man, except only on the evidence of two or three witnesses" (Paul, the founder of Christianity). What utter nonsense!! If secular courts had to follow that absurd "principle " no pedophile would ever be convicted! When have you ever heard of an elder abusing a little child knowing that there are "two or three" onlookers?! If the "apostle " Paul could be brought before a court of law for all the damage he's done through his ignorant teachings, I wonder how many millions of ruined lives could be laid at his feet, and how many billions of dollars he would have to pay as punitive damages for all his arrogant opinions! Yes, but the big difference is that those kids who then decide that Catholicism or Judaism is not for them can bow out gracefully while still maintaining ties with their parents and relatives, while JW kids become outcasts. (Oct 3, 2014 | post #77)
It's God made in the image of man. As man became more civilized, so did his god. And don't think the Israelites were any different from the nations around them. When many ancient Middle Eastern nations practiced animal sacrifices, guess what -- so did the Israelites! When animal sacrifices were no longer in fashion -- well, suddenly the god of the Bible no longer required them either! God made in the image of man. (Sep 9, 2014 | post #2)
Abolishing slavery was a messy business too, ultimately leading to a civil war that claimed the lives of thousands of people -- but it was the right thing to do. The fact that it may be costly to change some deeply ingrained wrong is not sufficient reason to avoid it -- that is not the American way. If we shied away from controversy we would still have slaves, and only white males would be landowners and have the vote, not to mention that we would probably all still be subjects of the British crown. No, we tackle wrongs and make them right, whatever the sacrifice. (Aug 23, 2014 | post #22)
I keep seeing this pro-LGBT propaganda about Israel, but my partner and I had a very different experience when trying to visit Israel. Despite the fact that our passports were in order, we were treated very rudely by Israeli airport personnel, both when entering Israel and again when leaving. I will never again set foot in that country until it ceases to be an Apartheid state. (Jul 5, 2014 | post #2)
