Bradford County Volunteer Fire Departments

Bradford, Your talking about volunteers in New York. We talking about volunteers in Bradford County, Florida. Our volunteers get nothing but the appreciation we show them, period. They deserve much more.  (Jun 10, 2012 | post #5)

Bradford County, you really don't know what an asset Terry is to your community. He does all this for a living in Alachua County and turns right around and does it free to better his community. His knowledge and experience save the county ten of thousands of dollars each year. He goes above and beyond on a regular basis. More communities need volunteers like Terry.  (Feb 1, 2010 | post #2)

Stimulus Spending on Local Road

They are paving two and half miles in Union County that are in slight disrepair. The need to fix the portion between the Bradford County line and SR 441. It needs it worse than this short portion does.Once you get past Brooker, your really taking a chance driving this road. It's dangerous! Thanks President Obama, it's nice to see your "stimulating " the economy with projects that really matter.  (Aug 19, 2009 | post #1)

Dreamcatcher, A locally produced paper would be great. I agree it would bring more local pride. I researched the idea, and economically it's quite a pinch. According to market research, there are not enough businesses to support it. Besides, newspapers are becoming dinosaurs. The problem with that is most Union County residents, according to the same research, aren't online. So what do you do? I've wanted to at least start an online website or blog, but there are so many hours in a day. It would work if I could make it profitable, but no such way just yet. I'm still working on it though. As far as Miller selling the paper, why sell the only news in town and give up control of what is put in it. As you know, I have personal experience in this area. I remember several occasions when news he didn't want printed, that would hurt someone he knew, was pulled from my pages. They build the paper Tuesday night and print it Wednesday morning. If he saw something he didn't want, he would put more ads or some kind of history article in it's place. If you would like to confirm this, ask the current reporter at the Times. I'll work on ways of thinking outside the box to boost this county.  (Aug 15, 2009 | post #67)

Dreamcatcher, your right we need to look homeward and develop our own organizations locally. I bet if we really tried we could pull off our own county fair if we tried. The one in Bradford County is suppose to be for both counties, but I've never heard it called the Bradford/Union County Fair. The chamber fiasco is a great example of Bradford County taking are resources and running. Several years ago then city manager Richard Tillis pulled the city out of the chamber for lack of service. He also suggested Union County form it's own chamber. It's a shame nothing more ever came of it. I understand the sheriff's office cooperating with Bradford in a drug task force, it makes sense. What doesn't make sense is why our elected officials are so short sighted when it comes to the future of this county. If your afraid to do the right thing because you won't get re-elected, your in office for the wrong reason. Hey dreamcathcer, any ideas on other areas the county could seperate itself from other counties?  (Aug 6, 2009 | post #65)

Ladies and gentlemen, the point of these forums is to DISCUSS the topic. If you disagree with someone, point out the facts as to why you disagree with another. If you both disagree, then leave it at that. Personal attacks are for the playground. Lets all be mature and debate the topic and leave it at that. Now, I have it on good authority that all the players in the County commissioner drama are not what they seem. I have spoken with more than a half dozen people who have all told me the same story. I can not go into detail about it, but I will say I have been enlightened about the players in the drama. The things that happened were done in the best interest of all involved and the community. That still does not change the fact that changes need to happen in the community. They are coming whether we want them to or not. So should we resist them until they run us over or should the board recognize there will be change and help the community adopt it. I feel the later is out best option. If we recognize there will be change and are proactive, the community can change gradually to meet it. Do I feel that our current elected officials are capable of this? I do know their past track record says no. While their hearts are in the right place, they need to look at the big picture. They vote like their thinking about 2 years from know instead of 20 years from now. We've elected them to make decisions that will effect our future. Their not accomplishing this goal. While I think they care about the community, we need more forward thinking people. It's time to change our government officials to reflect the future of Union County.  (Jul 27, 2009 | post #63)

Dream, after much thought I think I've figured out your identity. Does your brother works in Keystone Heights and your nephew work in Lake Butler?  (Jun 30, 2009 | post #54)

Dream, after the last few posts, I'm figuring we are very close philosophically. Maybe with just a slight difference in approach. I do agree that most officials like transparency, our school board is a fine example of such, our county officials use the "good ole boy system" to get things done. This leaves many unanswered questions for the general public to ponder. That's were the government in the sunshine law is suppose to make the process transparent. That's not happening in Union County. It's been done this way so long, I don't feel they know any other way. "It's worked this way for years so it must be ok," I believe is how they see it. That's not the way our government is suppose to be run. Our commissioner need in education in proper government. I understand not wanting reveal yourself, but I'm not sure who you are. It's early and my brain is not working. I need a little more help. Where did I work with your brother? That should help enough.  (Jun 30, 2009 | post #52)

Dream, I now see where your coming from. In speaking with many local department supervisors, I feel they believe it necessary to "horsetrade " to get what they want or need. They do this in place of making a valid argument in favor of the service or item they seek. I know they all feel the means justifies the ends. I wish our elected officials would take a look at things before saying no. There are many times these items are needed. The cost always seems to be the mean factor. What a shame. As long as taxpayer money is being spent wisely, give the departments what they need. As for political office, I still stand by my statement that I can do more here, than any of five county commissioners. Making people aware of the issues is far more important than holding an office. If Ronnie would open a forum, things at the sheriff's office could be changed. People just need to know what is going on. If you get enough of them to question their commissioner, the right thing will be done. The thing our five commissioners hate the most is citizens questioning the business of the county. If enough questions are asked, things get changed. That's were this fourm comes in. Ask enough questions, and five county commissioners will work hard to keep egg off their face. Though I'm not sure who said it, the quote "the pen is mightier than the sword" fits quite well here. By the Way, you failed to reveal your identity as promised.  (Jun 30, 2009 | post #50)

Before I go into this I'd like to say something about the posts on this topic. Personal attacks are unwarranted and unwanted. We all need to be adults when making our opinions known. Name calling has no place in this forum. Well Dreamcatcher, while I believed I knew your identity, I now have a few doubts. Your further posting have me doubting myself. With that said, I will go with my gut and say your Donna Jackson (but something tells me I'm wrong.) With that said, thank you for recognizing why I did what I did at the newspaper. It was hard for me to leave. I loved that job, but I had to. I will also tell you I agree with your previous post, there are "shenanigans " in every part of our government. From the sheriff's office to the road department, it happens. It all needs to be exposed. I would like to ask you a question. Since it's obvious you know I'm on the fire department what "shenanigans " do you believe go on there? Just wondering. Also, if I've made any allegations, there only personal observations of what I've experienced at the courthouse. Nothing more and nothing less. I have never found any specific violations so I would not accuse anyone without proof. I know the dangers of that. I do know that money has had to moved around to pay bills. I've been told that personally by Donna and Regina. Whether anything improper was done, I don't know. The problem with all this is public perception. By moving money around and not being completely transparent about it, things will be said. Everything that has to do with taxpayer money needs to be out front and open. It also needs to be explained so everyone understands what's going on. You are right about Michelle, she is too nice to get in on this. She has a tender heart and courthouse politics are no place for her. But an explanation of why she was moved I feel is in order. The commission sitting there saying we're doing this without an explanation looks real suspicious. If they discussed the change while not in the meeting they violated the sunshine laws. I know they violate them more often than not, but it's time they stopped. Every other governmental body has to comply, why should they be any different. Before everyone loses interest I'll end this with one last comment; Fortune does favor the brave.  (Jun 29, 2009 | post #48)

Dreamcatcher, lets get a few things straight. 1) The first post on this topic is not mine. 2) From your comments, you know who I am, I also suspect I know who you are. 3) My "level of venom" is directed at any government agency that misuses taxpayer money. 4) I'm the former editor of the Union County Times because it costs money to fee my family. 5) Bill and Regina are goo friends and that is well known. I never said he would help anyone whitewash anything. 6) I don't run for office because one vote on the county commission means NOTHING!! Getting people interested in the issues means everything. Five county commissioners will do the right thing when everybody is watching. Elections in Union County are popularity contests, it is not about the best candidate, yet. That will change. 7) I'm not Dylan Ford, but sure wish I was. It is clear that whoever they are, know me well and are trying to be me. So that we are all clear, UCwriter is James Redmond. I have set up an email [email protected] m.net because of the two letters to the editor in the Union County Times with that name, but Dylan Ford is someone else. If you know him or her. I'd be glad to know who it is. That person has the right idea. Now that all that is exposed, who are you dreamcatcher?  (Jun 28, 2009 | post #42)

Disappointed, good point, never thought of that. I have a few goals, but would like input from everyone. I know I'm not going to be able to think of everything. All input is greatly appreciated.  (Jun 24, 2009 | post #39)

Sometimes, I'm not really sure where to begin. I'm working on something that may kick it off. Won't say too much here, but if it happens, it will be hard to miss. I'm also starting a blog about all this. I'll get it posted here as soon as it's up. The second post from the top of this page has my email address. Drop me a line and I'd be more than happy to discuss it with you. While I don't know where to begin, I do know it will take time.  (Jun 23, 2009 | post #35)
