Gone but not forgotten

I remember a couple more businesses, (maybe already mentioned) Kmart-where Cinemark is now located Leyden Motel-where Walgreens is on 15th & North Ave. Ventures (dept store) was located at Melrose Crossing on Mannheim road (the other side of Melrose)I believe it is now Tony's Food.  (May 31, 2012 | post #554)

Cops crack down on cell phones in school zones

First of all if the cops are cracking down on this, they need to look to their own officers. I pick up my child from Melrose Park and while I sit and wait, I see people including police officers talking on the cell while driving in front of the crossing area. The cops need to sit there and enforce this if they really want to enforce this. They also need to catch those whom I see crossing the center yellow line. (also, there needs to be signs of school crossing, they took away the yellow flashing light that used to be there) But, in my opinion...it is all common sense. People need to be responsible drivers and not need the government to step in on everything. Just common sense and responsibility. Driving is a privilege, not a right.  (Nov 4, 2010 | post #114)

Meijers is coming to Winston Plaza

Read about it in the "Neighbors " magazine. They have already started work on it. It is going to be where the old Cub Foods was, next to Bally's. Here is a link for the online "Neighbors " magazine. http://content.yud u.com/Library/A1pb c5/NEIGHBORSMAGAZI NEOCT/resources/in dex.htm?referrerUr l=http%3A%2F%2Fwww .yudu.com%2Fitem%2 Fdetails%2F225189% 2FNEIGHBORS-MAGAZI NE-OCTOBER-2010 If the above don't work. Go to www.yudu.com and put in the keyword neighbors in the search box. This is a magazine that is delivered monthly with news in Melrose.  (Oct 14, 2010 | post #1)

Trailside Museum. It's still there. I remember they wanted to get rid of it, but petition went around the neighborhood and they saved it. I haven't been there in years, but the last time I went there, they still have the unfortunate animals there, I believe they took in the injured wildlife.  (Oct 9, 2010 | post #390)

Gone but not forgotten

My parents had a house on 17th & Lake St, back then just before the Melrose Park bank purchased it from them about 42 years ago. Then moved to North Maywood and I attended Lincoln School from Kinder to 8th grade. Missing the little store on Chicago Ave that was owned by Herb as well as Dora's Pizza. As I grew into teenage years, just hanging out in Melrose and going to the North Ave Roller Rink, Kiddieland, eating at the Ground Round(which is where those condos by Menards sit), shopping at Polk Brothers, Kmart, Portes and grabbing some ice cream at Baskin Robbins (where Magnum insurance is on 19th & Lake, going to Cock Robbins, and Jack-In-The-Box... .so many great places that we teenagers at that time could go and be teenagers.  (Oct 6, 2010 | post #376)

Gone but not forgotten

You are very welcome! I am glad that this topic brought out so many good memories! I was just sitting here one day, and thought, geez...where did all the good times go? Growing up in North Maywood and living in Melrose, I have seen so many changes. It is a real shame that all the good things are gone and not much left for our younger ones to enjoy and make good memories as well.  (Oct 6, 2010 | post #375)

Chicago's Kiddieland Amusement Park. 1928 -2009. Melrose ...

According to our local paper, they have approved the site for a Costo. Six Flags in Gurnee has purchased the Little Dipper coaster. So that part still stays in the state, but either way, another good thing has been taken.  (May 20, 2010 | post #13)

New bar (One Step Beyond old location)

No prob. Good to know. Thanks. Guess, just have to wait and see what happens to this place. Maybe their hours will be after the kids get out of school. Just concerned over the kids. Total shame the good places have been lost. All about money, money, money.  (Feb 6, 2010 | post #8)

New bar (One Step Beyond old location)

Diana & Calabria- not my thing, sorry to disappoint you. I was just wondering if anyone knew of this place. Having experienced drunks coming up to my car while I am picking up my child from school, really disturbed me. And knowing the previous place was shut down, but then reopened under another similar name in the town.  (Feb 5, 2010 | post #6)

New bar (One Step Beyond old location)

Ok. So One Step Beyond was shut down (located across from the school), and now I see a new place opened up called Melrose Place. From what the signs says, it is for Members only. Wonder who owns this and why the village continues to allow bars opening up from across the grade school. I guess I am not looking forward to more drunks coming up to cars when parents are there picking up their kids.  (Feb 3, 2010 | post #1)

Best Topic Award

Thank you for the compliment Reader. I came up with the topic one day just sitting and thinking about the old days. Thinking that there needs to be a topic to focus on the good things instead of all the negative things in this world. Although I'm 42yrs young, I have seen alot of changes growing up in Melrose and North Maywood. The memories were great and surely missed and it was Awesome reading all the memories. I have heard from people I haven't heard from in years. Frankly, I was surprised with all the posting this topic received. I had fun reading, and re-living memories as well as sharing them with my parents.  (Jan 26, 2010 | post #2)

What would Mrs scavo say

Here is another comment from the Judge: ""Mr. Cepeda, because of the nature of the crimes, it's important justice be done for the people of Melrose Park," she said. "I cannot go with the defense's recommendation, because we'd be sending a message to all the people that what he's done doesn't mater." She said the people of Melrose Park have conveyed the importance of this and other cases."
