Horses earn their keep in Petit family business

Years ago, butchers use to sell inexpensive horse meat for pet food...a lot of needy families would purchase it to eat themselves. Don't know how sanitary (safe, free from bacteria) it was, but it was MEAT! Might still be a profit in recycling worn-out nags...  (Dec 28, 2010 | post #3)

Longtime Pebble Beach golf volunteer Rose Cunningham not ...

Rose Cunningham is a REMARKABLE woman! I only hope to be as mentally astute and spry as she is as I rapidly approach my Social Security years... One of the key elements in her life is that she's remained physically and socially active. She hasn't been sitting in a rocking chair at a facilitated care establishment and watching the world pass by her window; she's stayed involved in a myriad of worthwhile projects throughout her l-o-n-g life. STAY HAPPY, Ms. Cunningham!  (Dec 27, 2010 | post #1)

Scott Salyer's Christmas visit gets OK

You've got to wonder if Rita Shugart will have anyone else at her Christmas dining room table other than Scott Salyer? And how many "friends " is she going to suddenly lose because of her "friendship " with a low-life **** ? I use to read her occasional Letter To The Editor with respect...not any longer. I hope they "enjoy" their stewed tomatoes.  (Dec 24, 2010 | post #3)

Fire

How ill timed for Macy's! I wonder how many people lingered around in the cold and rain to resume their shopping OR found other stores to spend their money in? Just what the BIG BOX store didn't need 6 days before Christmas...  (Dec 19, 2010 | post #1)

paring down your life to 100 things

This article is very timely...I've been downsizing my possessions and my life style for the last 18-months and it's a WONDERFUL feeling of relief to unload all the useless baggage that I had accumulated over the years. Anything worth salvaging was donated to the Discovery Shop (American Cancer Society resale shop) in Pacific Grove...the rest was either tossed into the garbage or hauled away by 1-800-GOT JUNK, who recycles close to 75% if what they take away. I've discovered that whilst I was decluttering my belongings, my focus on daily details became more acute and everything gradually fell into place. Exhilarating, intoxicating, heady and simply marvelous to reduce and re-purpose one's belongings! TRY IT...You'll be happier!  (Dec 8, 2010 | post #4)

Capitola Village celebrates 20th year with Surfing Santa

Amongst all the doom and gloom in the world (and our small corner of the planet) it's wonderful to read that some traditions haven't been phased out, due to economic hardship and lack of public funds. Kudos to Capitola Village!  (Nov 27, 2010 | post #3)

Details emerge from Friday's fatal shooting in Salinas

Maybe the National Guard should be dispatched to Salinas for a few months and attempt to put an end to all this gang violence. SOMETHING must be done to stop this needless killing.  (Nov 21, 2010 | post #5)

HOPEFUL FOR THE HOLIDAYS: Merchants already see increase ...

"Optimistic " regarding Holiday sales doesn't necessarily mean cash in the till at the end of the day...Unfortunatel y, California's unemployment rate is still in double digits and the economy doesn't really show any major signs of improving in the near future. I sincerely hope all the small merchants on the Peninsula have a "killer" Season, but none of them should be relying on their Holiday sales to keep them out of bankruptcy next year.  (Nov 20, 2010 | post #1)

One killed, two injured in Salinas shooting

"tis the season to be jolly..."?? The Holidays seem to bring out the worst in ALL of us. With unemployment at an all time high, the economy bottomed out and no foreseeable end in sight, it's no wonder everyone's nerves are totally frayed. We're probably going to see a rampant escalation in violence until some one figures out how to curb the gangs. Has any thought been given to bringing in the National Guard for a few months?  (Nov 19, 2010 | post #4)
