Men with Gun

Wow! It's been 10 days and no one knows anything; or they are not answering your question, anyway. Looks like the Lansing Police kept this one pretty quiet. They are good at that. Especially when the perps are "2 black guys".  (Nov 4, 2011 | post #3)

Home intruder shot to death in Chicago Heights

Give that man a medal! If more homeowners would be so brave and bold, our outrageous crime rates would go down to near zero! I would bet anything the now deceased intruder had a long criminal record. The only problem is this homeowner made our corrupt and ineffective (read liberal) "justice " system look bad, so they probably will find a way to charge him with something!  (Sep 28, 2011 | post #7)

Does anyone there remember a family with the last name Va...

There is a Michael Van Milligen in my 1973 and 1974 TF South yearbooks. That would make him roughly 55 years old now. Can't say I remember anymore. Hope this helps.  (Aug 8, 2011 | post #2)

What happened to TFS?

To NOT TRUE: Crime in Lansing is not being reported? I don't have to look any farther than this very same forum to find headlines like these: Men Charged With Raping Girl, 11, At Sleepover (Happened in Lansing less than a month ago.) Here is the link: http://www.topix.c om/forum/city/lans ing-il/T26OUAN5QRN E6L0EC Lansing man beaten to death http://www.topix.c om/forum/city/lans ing-il/TMTMF436SA6 8401DE Twin Brothers Charged With Sex Trafficking (Happened in Lansing) http://www.topix.c om/forum/city/lans ing-il/TMBG4R85H45 FDUSGT 4 held in Lansing slaying http://www.topix.c om/forum/city/lans ing-il/TFS31BV44TF 3P9GI5 Lansing teens face felony charges in fight http://www.topix.c om/forum/city/lans ing-il/TPFV0COKADC AL0VVR Shots fired in early morning hours Thursday http://www.topix.c om/forum/city/lans ing-il/TFH9QFHM804 3NEFQK And there's more if you keep looking. You mentioned that you lived in Lansing for 48 years. Does any of the above sound like typical Lansing headlines 20 years ago? Or even 10 years ago?  (Apr 1, 2011 | post #9)

What happened to TFS?

Butch: I graduated from TF South in 1976. Hey, you must have been one of the Seniors (when I was a Freshman) that threw a volleyball at me as hard as you could when we played "Slaughterbal l" in P.E. class! (LOL) This was sort of an initiation for all the Freshman boys at TFS. Only when I got to be a Senior, somebody thought Slaughterball was too dangerous and I never got to be on the right side of the initiation! Ah the good old days! Unfortunately, the good old days in Lansing seem to be over. If you haven't been back there for awhile, say 7 - 8 years, you would barely recognize it. There has been major white flight out of there in the last 4 - 5 years. I was there in 2009 and it has made quite a turn for the worse. The few people I know that are still there report a major rise in crime, hearing gunshots in the middle of the night and such. The sick economy keeping them form selling their homes is the only reason they are still there. Here is a link showing the 2010 Census results for Lansing: http://www.muninet guide.com/states/i llinois/lansing/ As you can see, Lansing is 49% white now. If you look farther down the link you'll see some of the surrounding towns: Lynwood is 23% white, Glemwood is 22% white, South Holland is 16% white, Calumet City is 9% white, and on and on it goes. So, if you want to keep your pleasant memories of the old days in Lansing and TFS intact, don't go back there now!  (Mar 29, 2011 | post #7)

Mini golf in Lansing

No, this wasn't Wrights Barnyard. The one RRV is talking about was on Torrance Ave., North of 170th and on the East side of Torrance just before the Little Calumet River. There was a Mini Golf course in front and a driving range in the back. I remember my dad teaching me how to swing a golf club there. Funny how I remember all that, but I can't remember the name of the place either! Dang, I'm getting old! :-(  (Mar 20, 2011 | post #4)

wow, lansing has really changed for the worse

OK Wrong, I'll give you that a direct comparison to Gary was out of line. Gary is without a doubt the worst city I have ever seen, and never wish to see again! My perspective is rather outdated because I haven't lived in Lansing for a long time. But, if you have lived in Lansing since 1963, you have to have noticed that Lansing has deteriorated quite a lot in the last few years. Perhaps my comment should have been: "Torrance Ave. is starting to look like Broadway in Gary looked 30 years ago." I mean even Gary was nice maybe 60 years ago! My mother told me that she used to ride the South Shore to downtown Gary to go shopping! That whole idea seemed totally foreign to me since Gary has been very bad as far back as I remember! Unfortunately I see Lansing headed in the same direction. Almost everyone I knew there has moved. The sick economy is the only thing stopping the few I know that remain from moving out as well; since they can't sell their homes. It's really sad. :-(  (Feb 18, 2011 | post #9)

MJ sues Bubba the Love Sponge

Is that disgusting dirtbag Bubba still on the radio? I thought that revolting pig was gone years ago! Even more, I can't believe people around here would still listen to that slimeball. I almost started a war in my workplace years ago because I couldn't stand listening to that horse's hiney for even 2 minutes. As annoying as Schnitt is, Bubba makes him sound good. Radio around here is pretty much hopeless!  (Feb 5, 2011 | post #125)

wow, lansing has really changed for the worse

Really, I had a very similar experiance to yours back in July of '09. I mean I was shocked! We got off the expressway and drove down Torrance Ave; well it looked more like Gary than Lansing! And I too always dreamed of one day buying my old house on Community Steet back, but that dream has become a nightmare! Seems like most of the white flight must have happened in the last 4-5 years. We lived there from 1955 (before I was born) until 1975. I graduated from TF South in 1976. Lansing was a great place to grow up back then. I swear, I don't think the back door of our house was ever locked the whole time we lived there. My Dad was notoriously bad about leaving his keys in the car all the time, and never was that a problem! It was that safe and ideal of a town. I moved to FL in 1986, but would always come back every few years to visit family and friends. Was there in 1998 and had a great time. Came back again in 2002 when my mother died, still looked great. Yet again in 2003, let my wife and young son go play in Lan Oak Park alone, no problem. Back again for another funeral in 2004, still the same old Lansing. But in July of 2009, the change was incredible! In those 5 years it went way down! I'm a real nostalgia freak, and used to love spending time in my old home town, but that time, I frankly couldn't wait to get out of there. I just pained my heart to see the town I loved going bad, and I probably will never go back, so I can try to keep my fond memories from being tainted by the "new reality" of Lansing. :( I guess the old saying "You can never go home" is true.  (Feb 4, 2011 | post #7)
