The gentleman you mention receives a $65,000 pension with a 2% escalator that starts at age 65. That works out to age 83 or 84 before he starts collecting the same amount this other guy gets starting at day one while in his 40's. The gentleman with the escalator also had well over 30 years of sevice with 30 years worth of payments to the pension fund. Sorry, Sorry, but your math is fuzzy. I would have taken the deal with the $95K starting in my 40's. This travesty to the pension fund needs to be investigated by outside authories. Taxpayers should demand from their Councilmen such an investigation. Perhaps the mayor and his cronies should pay this pension and not the taxpayers. How could HArkins let this happen? Is he trying to bankrupt the pension fund.  (Oct 14, 2012 | post #158)

Do you approve of John A. Harkins as Mayor?

Hey PT if you think the mayor is great, you have either inhaled too much elephant dung or you too are collecting one of those special deal $95K Town of Stratford pensions from your star clown.  (Oct 13, 2012 | post #119)

HHHMMM...nothing on this latest pension scandal on the Jizezel Word Charter. I can only wonder why? So if this cop starts collecting at 19 years, he will be collecting 6 years sooner than he was suppose to. That is only about 600K in pension fundstax dollars. Is this the Harkins idea of safeguarding the pension fund? Mr. Harkins, it sure doesn't sound like Stratford is out of the pension business, it sounds more like like you are trying to bankrupt the pension fund. Oh well, special deals for special people I guess. "Anyone but Harkins in 2013"  (Oct 13, 2012 | post #153)

Republican Leader 'Amazed' to Hear Stratford Financially ...

GOP Lou should not be amazed. The people of Stratford are afraid of the republicans and afraid of Harkins' style politics. Hell, I didn't vote for Obama last time, but after seeing what republicans like Harkins are doing, I will this time.  (Oct 2, 2012 | post #1)

Stratford senior police official suspended for cover up

I say give the guy a huge pension deal and make him a deputy chief or at least captain.  (Sep 22, 2012 | post #57)

HAHAHA…David, did you dump that Jizebel screen name??!!!! Truth and Justice in a criminal prosecution is an acquittal by jury, or a dismissal by a judge for lack of probable cause. A case that endures months of judicial scrutiny, only to end with plea of accelerated rehabilitation right before trial is to start is very different than “truth and justice.” Accelerated Rehabilitation is pre-trial probation that frees up a clogged court system, and it gives an offender a second chance without a criminal conviction. Basically it is a legal loophole and has nothing to do with “truth and justice.” If I were arrested and “didn’t do it,” I’d fight it and seek “truth and justice” by an acquittal.  (Sep 21, 2012 | post #52)

Is this one of those guys that got arrested and got accelerated rehabilitation? Don’t you have to plead guilty to a crime to get accelerated rehabilitation? If I were innocent and got arrested, I wouldn’t plead AR…I’d fight it. How did these guys get promoted? Sounds very suspicious to me, but I am no lawyer.  (Sep 19, 2012 | post #47)

Annual physicals in the event of those miraculous recoveries after retirement and reassignment to other Town positions for a partial disability is the way to go.  (Sep 16, 2012 | post #142)

Let me start off by saying for a truly service related disabled fireman or cop, one who can no longer work, that person deserves 100 percent pension with raises for the rest of their life. I consider them heroes of the community for their commitment to our safety. That being said, if one’s disabled body is held together with screws, pins, rods, and plates a pension of 50-65K is NOT enough, but if one’s body is still capable of heavy manual labor, 29K is WAY too much. You, my friend, are trying to compare apples to oranges with your figures.  (Sep 13, 2012 | post #134)

Hey Sal who exactly are the right authorities? The authorities that are letting this happen, perhaps? Do you think anything will come of reporting anything now? It will probably be swept under the rug like everything else. How do Stratford residents stop it? November 2013 comes to mind.  (Sep 13, 2012 | post #133)

Instead of making blanket statements that my facts are inaccurate, feel free to correct me with your thorough and complete knowledge of the relevant CBA’s , labor law, and of, course negotiations. Most CBA’s are not as clear and specific as you seem to believe; often the spirit of the negotiations has different meanings, depending upon where you sit at the negotiation’s table. That is why we have the labor board and courts. Do you for one minute believe that the Town expected a settlement, like workman’s comp., to be considered income for pension purposes? I don’t think so. Where is the provision for freezing an extraordinary income to boost one’s pension without vesting and leaving? I couldn’t find it. What I did find was a provision that allowed re-assignments for workers that were unable to perform their job functions. So I ask again, why isn’t your landscaper friend cutting grass for the Town of Stratford since us taxpayers are still paying him and his insurance.  (Sep 11, 2012 | post #121)

What Should Take Fashion Bug's Place in Stratford?

How about the Harkins re-election campaign HQ. Harkins can even use the going out of business signs from the fashion bug.  (Sep 10, 2012 | post #1)

"Jez is friends with the fire people involved in the mess but it does taint his opinion on the situation." Ha Ha Ha that is just too funny. If anyone else got a comp. settlement, worked double shifts to the last day, and then wanted a bigger pension...or If any other cop locked his pension with an extraordinary income without service time to retire...or If some other cop retired on a disability and ran a landscaping operation, because they were too "disabled " to be a cop... David would be typing his fingers to the bone. What is fair is fair, and the taxpayers are being screwed by a few. What is the Harkins Administration doing...nothing, but telling us that "Stratford is out of the pension business." Call Harkins and your councilman and ask WHY???  (Sep 9, 2012 | post #116)
