Cardinal says atheist's theories "absurd"
How does an atheist know when his/her actions are moral or a good? Why should he/she care? The rewards (after death are the same). Why have any morality at all? If all that is to come is death (for atheist), then without any hope (for eternity) despair is your reward. Yes, arrogance is a sin. Being a Christian means you should be living a moral life. This is not a sin of arrogance, but a virtue, a moral good. (8 hrs ago | post #3997)
I am encouraging people to drop AARP as they do not represent the interests of the seniors in this country. AARP has lost a lot of their members when they endorsed the Democratic health plan (which abolishes the Medicare Advantage Program. AARP will make a big haul if this happens. Seniors will lose and AARP will win. The AARP web site states "These plans carry the AARP name and United HealthCare Insurance Company pays a fee to AARP and its affiliate for use of the AARP trademark and other services. Amounts paid are used for the general purposes of AARP and its members." (Yesterday | post #44)
Howard Dean, a well known Democrat says the current health plan (which changes daily to get to the 60 votes) should be scrapped. He claims in the present bill, the insurance companies would come out smelling like roses. (Yesterday | post #43)
Your View: Letters to the editor (Dec. 15)
ED ABALOS I disagree with your impression of the refurbished altar at St. Genevieve's Church. It is a beautiful altar and it's position in the sanctuary makes the rest of the Church come to life. I would not have it at any other location. The workers done a tremendous job in the restoration. You are concerned about using the current fixture as an altar in the celebration of the Mass. Ed, the fixture (or an altar) is not the focus of the celebration. The focus (and yours) should be on the Eucharist and not the pews, stain glass windows, altar, etc. These things all make up the physical Church but it is the Eucharistic celebration that sets Catholics apart from other Christians. I welcome you to return to St. Genevieve's Church and celebrate the Eucharist and while you are there, enjoy the beauty of the old altar and the parishioners. I also want to thank you for your time in writing your objections. I hope my comments will shed some light on your opinion and ease your concern. (Tuesday | post #5)

Jenny, I see you are promoting sex so that your abortion mill can thrive by killing the unborn child. Contraception mentality and then you slip into the abortion mentality. You need both to keep your culture of death in business. Jenny, abstinence always works and never fails. Sex education in schools is wrong and is the responsibility of the parents. Why did assume that I assumed? You apparently have missed the facts and were absorbed by the media that focus on Priests and others that abusedI agree that we should not vilify any profession because of the criminal acts of others. I did not mean to vilify school teachers but my intention was that Calvin was vilifing Priests and Boy Scouts when the larger number are school teachers. I post three web sites with verifiable data with some comments from the second. There are many more if you would just google the topic. http://www.boston. com/news/education /higher/articles/2 007/10/23/commenta ry_stop_sex_abuse_ now/ "Furthermore, Shakeshaft said that attempts by those in authority to conceal abuse, which caused such scandal in the Catholic church, may be evidenced within school systems. A 1994 study she did on disciplinary action against 225 public school teachers who admitted sexually abusing children in New York state found 15 percent were terminated and 25 percent received no disciplinary consequences" http://natcath.org /NCR_Online/archiv es2/2004a/032604/0 32604j.htm In 1975, there were 7,000 cases of childhood sexual abuse reported in the United States. By 1985, there were over 120,000 reported cases. http://www.maryann ewatson.com/sexabu se.html (Tuesday Dec 15 | post #37)

You have never seen nor heard me use an excuse to protect any pedophile or their enablers. They are criminals and should be brought to trial and sentenced. The post I commented on was mean an in my opinion, was a intentional jab at Priests and Boy Scouts when the preponderance of evidence have school teachers the main abusers. To me it is like cursing a tree while you ignore the forest. To me your opinion is very shallow. (Tuesday Dec 15 | post #36)

Big Al, I am not an expert as you appear to be on Galileo but here is another take on this issue. You bugged me just enough to see what I could find what other people said. You may find this person's viewpoint interesting, I sure did. Robert Nisbet (1914-1996), Nisbet, a sociologist by training and historian by temperament – but no Catholic, or even much of a believer – warned of such abuses in an debunking the Enlightenment myth that the Catholic Church brutally oppressed Galileo. Early on, Nisbet adds, Galileo told his friend Kepler that he was censoring himself for "fear not of ecclesiastical but of scientific-scholar ly opinion." As Galileo's views became known, the first public protests arose from "jealous and apprehensive university professors," not from clerical quarters. When Galileo's friend Pope Urban VIII reluctantly allowed a trial by the Inquisition (headed by another Galileo supporter), the great man's nemesis was no churchman but a fellow scientist. Most important for our purposes is Galileo's fate after his enemies forced the Inquisition to find him "guilty" of Copernican teachings. Though made to take a pro forma oath of recantation, he was not imprisoned. Instead, he was given "house arrest" at his wealthy patron's estate where he had long conducted most of his research. He lived for years, and far from being daunted or suppressed, he produced some of his most important writings, "was in constant communication with the leading scientific lights of Italy and all Europe," and had "as many students as he wished" to assist him and continue his work after his death. A great idea then Michelle Obama "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country." could be changed to "For the second time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country." You are correct that she has done nothing spectacular, if fact she hasn't done much at all. But wait, isn't this why our amateur President received the Nobel Peace Prize? So to be consistent, give it to a person who has done nothing. I have a another suggestion "Las Cruces High School for Dummies". It might be a winner. (Thursday Dec 10 | post #3)
