Downtown Santa Cruz homeless ministry raises ire of city leaders
Why are there hippies in Santa Cruz? Because there are no jobs there. This has been a running joke for decades. I think the official unemployment rate in Santa Cruz is near 13%. If you include all the people that never qualified for unemployment insurance then we're talking well over 25% unemployed in this county. You can't train people for jobs that don't exist. We need to embrace our homeless as our friends. Consider your donation to them a tax that goes directly to the people in need, and not some general fund. They are part of the community and if you can't afford to spare a single dollar then believe me, just a little bit of acknowledgment will go a long way. We are all people. I don't approve of all this animosity toward the Santa Cruz homeless people and the churches and good Christians that support them. The next time you see someone asking you for their share of the homeless tax, perhaps you can look at your own life and give thanks (Yesterday | post #105)
Mike Rotkin: Arana Gulch 'facts' were incorrect
Of course we need both trails. I don't understand how you people just don't get it. The dominant paradigm of an auto-centered community must change. We need separate infrastructure for bicycles. Most of the complaints about building bicycle infrastructure are based on cost. Building and maintaining a bicycle corridor would cost less than a fraction of what it would cost to build and maintain an auto corridor. To say that we don't need more bike-ways is just being selfish. We build car roads, we build bike roads, everyone's needs are met. In order to present an argument against bike-ways you NEED to experience riding your bike on an path that is completely separated from the roads. It is truly the way to go and you will love it. I can't emphasize enough that you NEED to experience this pleasure before you present your inane arguments (Sunday Dec 20 | post #12)
California Highway Patrol kicks off DUI checkpoint campaign
How the hell is this legal? You mean to tell me the CHP can just pull me over and check my breath? What happened to illegal search and seizure? I do not approve of this tactic. Can the sheriff do a random house search to see if someone has been shoplifting? No because we are protected by the 4th amendment. Remember the constitution people? I'm not a fan of the drunk driver, but we must pull people over if they are driving erratically or swerving. You can't just randomly check everyone. Guilty until proven innocent? This is disgusting. Pacific Avenue 'positive loitering' rally set for Friday
Hey this is a great way to meet your neighbors and gather as a community. I'm not a fan of the violence that occasionally happens downtown, but I also do not want to see downtown Santa Cruz turn in to a Boca Raton. I vote for freaks and musicians and loiterers of all types to be able to sit on a plethora of park benches all up and down Pacific Ave. Just think of the scroungy panhandler as your troubled niece and have a little empathy. Shots fired during fight in Zayante, no injuries
Zayante is a nice community of hippies, commuters, and rural living lovers who enjoy the complacency only an isolated river valley can bring. Zayante serves as the gateway to the regions most beautiful creek treasures in the county. Take a drive up Upper Zayante this winter and see the lush green foliage, mostly native, and tall cliffs delivering double stream waterfalls. The meth days are history. Most of the talk is just residual story telling of a day come and gone. The hooligans today are a small bunch and we all know who they are. It is more comical than a serious matter. Sure, they shouldn't be playing with guns, or matches, or even scissors, but hooligans will be hooligans. This would be a great tv show if they were all wearing skirts. (Friday Dec 4 | post #37)
California adopts first-in-nation rules to cut energy use by ne...
If you google search 'china pollution' you can see that communism is not a solution. We capitalists need to put a price on things like air pollution and resource depletion. If you want to make a product that uses more energy than necessary, say a Hummer or a non-led light bulb, then you as a producer must pay for the air that will be polluted or the carbon that is released by your product in advance. If you want to cut costs and increase profits, then you need to build a more efficient product. The air is currently free for you to pollute, but it shouldn't be. I have to breathe that stuff every day. That air belongs to me. (Nov 19, 2009 | post #5)

Regulation is necessary. If people don't have the option to purchase a power consuming TV then we don't have power consuming TV's in our homes. The People of the State of California don't just volunteer conservation, they must not have an option to not conserve. "How much does it cost if I buy it right now." That is all we care about. All these environmental externalities like air quality and carbon footprint are meaningless. If you purchased a laptop would you pay a little extra for an Energy Star? Of course not! That's why we need to not give you that choice. Less efficient anything should be taxed to offset the environmental costs of having to generate the extra power. (Nov 18, 2009 | post #2)
Santa Cruz County passenger rail a long-sought but uphill track
Yeah it's kind of like the neighbor who suddenly decides to build a second story on their house and inadvertently blocks your ocean view. Would you be that neighbor if your family needed the extra space? Would you buy a house near a hwy that might need widening? I wouldn't because of the possibility that "someday " a giant sound wall might be erected above my fence. Train tracks are for trains. Surprise (Nov 16, 2009 | post #42)
Santa Cruz County passenger rail a long-sought but uphill track
These difficult economic times are temporary and will pass, just as they always have, only to boom and blossom again. There is another rail corridor that runs through Felton up Zayante canyon that will never become a rail trail due to the broken up parcels. We can not let this happen to the current rail-way. This rail-zone is invaluable and essential to the community and we should not scoff at such a prime opportunity to have it. Think about how much it would cost if we ever needed to take back the rail-way via eminent domain? If you ever decide to ride your bicycle along a rail-way corridor then you will know that it is an enjoyable, peaceful, easy and safe way to ride a bike. (Nov 16, 2009 | post #23)
