Minnesota Senate OKs 2012 statewide vote on amendment ban...

given how much the politicians have been bribed by the banks and the corporations (yes i consider larger campaign donations bribes worthy of felony convictions), and how much we've focused on war in other nations instead of our own best interests here in the US, and all the "reality tv" shows we have on right now instead of more intelligent dramas and comedies, we're already on that "roman decline" path folks, not just getting there.  (May 12, 2011 | post #108)

Minnesota Senate OKs 2012 statewide vote on amendment ban...

why is it that people who want to shrink government at every turn want to put government in people's bedrooms and personal lives? if you really want to shrink government then get out of these personal issues of concience (abortion, gay rights, etc). am i a big fan of gay marriage, not necessarily, since i am a catholic. but is it government's place to decide that for me and other catholics and other people who do not believe how i do? NO.  (May 11, 2011 | post #7)

Conservatives rally for tax cuts at state Capitol

one dumb question. with all these new laws from voter ID to governing people's sex lives to a stronger presence of the police in every people's lives, who's going to pay for all of it that is being proposed by the legislature? after all, what happens when you run out of money to cut from health care and the schools? you still pay the cops and the nurses, unless you expect them to be fired or take a paycut as well. makes me think back to the emmer ad during the campaign where they had a married couple, one a nurse and the other a policeman. both complaining that if dayton got in they might have to pay more taxes. well, the question in rebuttal given the latest proposed budget cuts is: would you rather pay another 1% or so now, or would you rather lose 50% or more of the family's income after the cities lay off policemen and the nurses get laid off because too many bills aren't getting paid (via the medicare/medicaid cuts)?  (May 8, 2011 | post #118)

Vikings 'very very close' to Arden Hills deal

well, we still don't have a sate budget plan, we're still wondering how to fix the potholes all over the place (including some nasty ones that showed up lately on 94 westbound between 35e and dale). but we got a billion bucks for a new stadium and infrastructure. makes me wonder at times if the people who always build new stadiums and such actually tried their strategy somewhere other than SimCity.  (May 6, 2011 | post #205)

all you need is one nor'easter to come in to blow that game out of the water. just far enough off the coast to blast them with a blizzard as bad or worse than we get here in the twin cities.  (May 6, 2011 | post #49)

Facebook article commenting: How-to and questions

i'm not a fan of this new face book comment system as it is showing info at the moment. it shouldn't list where i work or what i do for a living as part of the comment. it should have the name and the current city of residence showing up there and that's it (and i tried changing settings and it didn't help in that regard). have it pull up more limited info, and it could maybe work. but currently how it shows up there just doesn't jive.  (May 3, 2011 | post #11)

At least 15 dead as storms pound South for second day

i don't know what building codes should be, but you can only build houses so strong with our current technology. ef4 and ef-5 tornadoes have winds higher than cat 5 hurricanes, and not many structures can withstand cat-5 hurricanes for any decent amount of time (thinking of the damage caused by the cat-3/4 hurricane that came thru Houston a couple of years ago). if you wanted structures that are still standing after an ef4 or ef-5 storm, they are not cheap by any stretch of imagination. and i'm not sure what government would want to make that much of a mandate on their citizens given the current political and economic environment. and it'll have to be dug up. but alabama from what i understand has a higher amount of modular homes and/or trailer-type of homes than a lot of states in the country (which aren't as strong as homes that have structures more implanted into the ground. so even if they got to the best part of the house they could get to in a tornado, they might still not have been safe-enough for an ef-4 or ef-5 tornado. it's just a sad event, especially that now we're over 300 dead and rising, and several ef-5's are confirmed down in the deep south.  (Apr 29, 2011 | post #51)

At least 15 dead as storms pound South for second day

either way, i will say this much. remember our outbreak from last year? when we had multiple funnels down near albert lea and the big wadena tornado and other stuff? all it takes is the right setup and we're in the same boat the south is in attm. This was just a very freak setup for the southeast US for this time of the year. you don't have a double-barrel low with both barrels below 992mb at this time of year and not expect disaster. the usual season for severe weather for areas south of i-40 is usually late feb thru early april. so this is going to be studied for years by a lot of meteorologists, and hopefully we can use this to make predictions even better. after all, the south did know this was going to be an ugly day to start with, if you looked at the SPC day 1 convective discussion. i just hope they can rebuild down there in time for hurricane season in about a month's time.  (Apr 28, 2011 | post #21)

Mike Rothman: Get started on Minnesota's own health-insur...

while i agree we need to do this, the place where i'd watch is up in vermont where they are actually going the single-payer route state-wide. if they can pull this off at a state-wide level over the next couple of years and save money as a state while doing so, we at some point might want to look at that.  (Apr 27, 2011 | post #1)

Dayton, GOP still have budget gap

excuse me? one question, does this mean you'll be willing to vote against say T-paw and any other republicans as well for using accounting tricks to balance the last budget (the shifting of payments to schools and cities in the last biennium to this budget, at least on paper)? i'd like to see the truthful accounting on both sides actually done before i decide that either is on the right track. if i have to pay a bit more (yes i'm a single lower-middle class person that paid their income taxes like everyone else), so be it. but NO MORE ACCOUNTING TRICKS TO BALANCE THE BUDGET!!!! no more saying tax cuts pay for themselves without actual evidence in hard numbers that this is in fact the case (instead of hyperbolie and talking points). no more saying cutting taxes on one level (state or local) so that we end up having to pay the taxes on the other (local or state). and no more hiking fees and not calling them tax hikes (whether they're administrative fees on tickets, user fees for various services etc).  (Apr 26, 2011 | post #20)

New Labor plan: Nationwide protests

why not make it that unless you're an actual registered voter you can't donate in an election, period (whether it's directly to a campaign or through issue ads and other services-in-kind)? that way you take both sides out and base the campaigns on the people who actually live and work where the election is held. yes that means soros and murdoch is out. but it also means the koch brothers and the unions are out. make it minnesotans for minnesota, not outsiders to tell us up how to vote for our elections.  (Apr 21, 2011 | post #21)

House sponsor of voter ID bill threatens Dayton end run i...

only way i even think of favoring such an amendment, i'd like to add something to it. i would like to add language in there to the effect of "and with the voter database established with this system of voter id, only voters within this database will be allowed to donate in any and all registered candidates for all elections (ie elections from local aldermen and dog catchers to US Representatives and US senators, citing several clauses in the US Constitution that support the states setting how elections are run) that take place in the state of Minnesota other than for President of the United States, given its current rules of funding for the presidental election. This would not allow any corporation, public or private, profit or non-profit, to donate to candidates in said elections, whether in-kind through unaffiliated advertising, indirectly through advertising via 'issue ads' and other such methods, or directly to candidates themselves. Any corporate entity or in-kind corporate entity that breaks such rules is subject to felony prosecution in which the the entity will be subject to confiscation and the board of directors of said entity at the time of the violation shall be subject to prison time, and may be extradited for this offense from another state or country for trial on such an offense. if a non-voter makes an illegal donation to an election or electoral candidate, then this is also subject to a felony or misdemeanor offense that shall include fines and jail time, and also shall be subject to extradition if needed. " in essence, since we're going to have an electric voter database for all of this to make verification work, we could also take the big money out of politics from out-of-state interests, whether that be the koch brothers, or george soros; the unions or the moral majority; etc. those who have an actual stake in the result of the election will be allowed to donate to said election. anything wrong with that as a starting point?  (Apr 18, 2011 | post #10)
