Naked Swimming At School

A shame these media commentaries always view it as a negative experience. In all my years of naked swimming, teaching and coaching, I do not recall anyone ever have an adverse reaction to having to do it. Personally, I really enjoyed the freedom. I more clearly recall the grumbling when suits were required.  (Jan 29, 2011 | post #3036)

Never ceases to amaze me how small minded people can be totally blind to any experience that did not happen to them -  (Dec 20, 2010 | post #2460)

Naked Swimming At School

For guys swimming every day, nude made sense - no wet bathing suits getting moldy in lockers and causing infections as they can. There will be those who strongly disagree, but I always found swimming nude made better times and hence conditioned the swimmers better for the actual meets. And it used to be until quite recently that modesty and privacy for boys was not considered something necessary or desirable for that matter so swimming nude was considered to be a normal and healthy thing for boys. Times changed very quickly and not for the better in some respects in my opinion. The current rampant sexuality in media combined with the current puritanical view of nudity makes for very strange times.  (Dec 20, 2010 | post #2458)

I agree with you , Sir Arthur, best of all possible worlds everyone would have a choice to be nude or not. Our home meets in high school we had the choice but no one on the team ever wore a suit to my recollection. At our open practices when I was a coach - I am sure if a boy was uncomfortable nude in mixed company, they would not have joined the swim team but that issue just never came up when boys were trying out for the team. And I was always nude at these open practices as well - never asked them to do what I was not willing to do myself  (Dec 20, 2010 | post #2456)

YMCA nude swimming

I did not go to a co-ed camp - went to a Y camp through high school and worked as a counselor while in college. All swimming was nude of course and all activities were pretty much clothing optional - only clothing requirement was at least shorts for meals but not strictly enforced. Almost all counselors worked nude all the time as I did - about half of boys were nude at any given time as well. But summers at the family farm - boys always swam nude in presence of the girls who were always suited - just how things were then and seemed perfectly natural. Privacy and modesty was for girls - unthinkable for boys. I never owned a swim suit until I was in college and that was only for intercollegiate meets.  (Dec 19, 2010 | post #1071)

Never heard of any peel back inspections in all my years of teaching. That said, I would always lecture every class on the importance of good personal hygiene and now to shower properly - most kids are never taught how to clean themselves properly - especially there days. Being uncircumcised myself, in the days of nude swimming, I never had any qualms in demonstrating to the class of how to properly retract and clean the foreskin on myself - such a demonstration now would be immediate grounds for dismissal...  (Dec 19, 2010 | post #2448)

I now live half the year with my twin sons on the farm they own with their husbands in N Calif and half the year in Palm Springs. In Palm Springs, I have ample opportunity for nude swimming at my home I share with several other retired men and resorts in the area. I get to the beach occasionally in N Calif, but do more nude hiking there as I do in the desert. I keep pretty busy at the farm, where we live quite simply and close to the land, which includes all of us living and working naked, weather and work conditions permitting.  (Dec 19, 2010 | post #2447)

Naked Swimming At School

What you have described in your posts is quite different from my own experience as a swimmer, teacher and coach. I am in my late 60s and only recently retired as a swim teacher and coach in the Midwest. I realize all too well times and attitudes have changed but they were quite different once. From the time I started high school until around 1980, I had about 25 years experience swimming , teaching and coaching nude, when policy in my school district changed and swim classes became co-ed. I was certainly never uncomfortable and to my recollection - no one else ever was - just the way things were. The need for privacy and modesty was not considered to be something necessary for boys and men. And while it was never a subject that I brought up - students in more recent years would express to me their wish to be able to swim nude as their fathers and grandfathers did. And I never heard of CFNM fantasies until I started reading this forum. That said, I competed nude in high school in front of mixed audiences and as a coach, was frequently seen nude by mixed audiences of family, friends and faculty who would drop by swim team practices, which were nude until the same time . I was "dressed " appropriately for my job - never felt any shame or embarrassment about it. at swim team sessions was frequently seen nude  (Dec 19, 2010 | post #2446)

In my experience, the locker room was always off limits to females, except for the school nurse. Though the swim team and I were used to being seen nude at the practices, the locker room was also used by other sport teams not used to open nudity. Besides, in those days, as I mentioned before, locker rooms had no privacy to speak of as even the toilets had no privacy partitions and the urinal was an open trough - very different to how things are now. Most who attended our practices were also family and friends. If anyone spectator looked unfamiliar to me, I would introduce myself and ask their reason to be there. Being naked myself, I believed helped to establish my authority in who I thought belonged there. Male nudity in those days certainly did not have the sexual connotation it does today. We swam nude as it made us better swimmers not for any thrill of it. I coached taught and coached nude as I was in the water demonstrating myself all the time - and I believe it would have been hypocritical to require my students and team to be nude if I were not in those circumstances.  (Nov 30, 2010 | post #2379)

Honestly, I really have no memories in what happened in this regard in other people's homes. And really do not wish to speculate today on private matters that are not my business.  (Oct 27, 2010 | post #2144)

Thom Our family history indeed seems quite similar. To call the boys bathroom a bathroom was a bit of a stretch. It was really party of our attic bedroom stuck in the corner - a metal stall shower, commode and a sink. Would not pass any building code today. Dad built it himself, no doubt reasoning boys together did not need any privacy. That was certainly the case both at school and the Y as well - toilets had no partitions and were out in full view in the wet area. The urinals were troughs, not separate ones. Cannot imagine that today of course. I do not recall any expectations of us having to be dressed at home. Dad set the pace - as he was more often than not nude himself - he usually got dressed for "proper company" but there was no expectations for us to do so even as physically mature teens - we were still "the boys". Clothes meant more laundry and laundry was real work back in those days. And we never considered ourselves nudists - we were just being guys who were more comfortable naked and that was accepted and even expected in those times where we lived. And I certainly do not recall boys or men ever wearing suits at the casual spots we used to swim at - at my grandparents or friends lake houses. Even on the rare road trip we would take and stay at a country motel - boys did not wear suits in those days. Ted  (Oct 19, 2010 | post #2106)

Naked Swimming At School

Thom As a high school student, in the earlier 1960s, I was able to compete nude at home meets and maybe about half of away meets. My Dad was coach, and any meet under his management was swimsuit optional. That said, our entire team was always nude, to my recollection, given the chance - how we best competed. As a high school coach, in the 1970s, up to around 1980, our practices were always nude, but meets were suited - per policy in the district - and I believe any other district in our area then. But I never wore a suit myself in these practices, no matter time of day. Don't remember much about the ladies in the front office at the Y, other than sometimes while working there, I had front desk duty when they went home in evening. I went up there when they were leaving, I wore a towel at least to take over, as I usually came straight from the pool or running the track above the basketball court. But only men came there at night usually, so I could be naked there sitting on the towel, doing my work or homework until closing. Had three brother and three sister - I was middle child with two older brothers. My brothers and I shared an attic room with bunk beds and a rudimentary bathroom - Dad also usually used ours. My Mom and sisters had the good bathroom on the second floor - we were not allowed there. Like you, my brothers, Dad, and I were always nude at the breakfast table - the wood/coal furnace would going full tilt then in winter and it was very warm downstairs no matter the weather - and we owned no underwear or pjs. And on weekends, like you - just stayed naked doing chores and stuff around the house and yard - end of road property with privacy - weather permitting. Ted Ted  (Oct 15, 2010 | post #2048)

No - I do not have any daughters - have four sons - two are married with kids - the twins who run the race are gay. They have partners who unfortunately they cannot yet legally marry. I now live with them for part of the year on the organic farm they own and operate several hours from San Francisco.  (Oct 14, 2010 | post #2044)

Naked Swimming At School

Hi Thom Have gone back and read some of your postings - our experiences certainly do have a lot of parallels - despite some doubting our veracity !! When I was coach, my team like yours, wanted to compete nude as well. If it was up to me - certainly would have let them - but it was policy by that time that all meets were suited. Their best times were invariably in practice when they were nude. I was both teacher and coach - no budget to have two separate positions. But unlike your coach, I stayed bare for open practices where family and friends may have been watching. I was certainly comfortable that way and no one ever questioned it. As someone else said, I was in "uniform " for my job, as I was in the water a lot myself then teaching and demonstrating technique. Your Y also seemed to be the same policy as one I went to. Lot of stories there I can go into when I have more time. Your family as well seemed to be quite casual regarding male nudity - and yes - modesty was something that was the domain of women and girls but not expected of men and especially boys.  (Oct 13, 2010 | post #2032)

Naked Swimming At School

My sons have ran the race naked and barefoot for the past several years with an overwhelmingly positive response from fellow runners (they run not walk the course) and the crowds watching. I look forward to doing it with them next year.  (Oct 13, 2010 | post #2031)
