Hello from lovely South Windsor, CT, U.S.A. A great place to live and visit. Just keep an eye out for the funny stuff...there's a bit of that about.
Hartford Mayor Slams Courant's Web Forum
Hartford is like Beirut? Actually not. Hartford has had 90 shootings so far this year. Beirut is probably the safer place to live. What's interesting here is the amount of effort expended by city pols to spin the media and control the message. If Hartford is so safe, then why are the State Police being deployed there? Why are the Hartford pols trying to make excuses for the apathy and uncaring attitude of the residents? Why is the state govt doing so little to try to influence the events in our capital city? Building a convention center and science center apparently does not remove the thugs from the streets. Maybe we need the Army patrolling the streets of Hartford. After all, they have plenty of experience from Iraq in how to deal with terrorists. Desperate times require desperate measures. (Jun 17, 2008 | post #16)
Man Charged With Sex Assault in South Windsor
If you only live in the next town why would you need to get a motel room? Because you are planning to do unlawful things, stuff you don't want your neighbors to know about. Drugs and prostitution, that stuff is always going on down at the motels on the Berlin Turnpike. (May 15, 2008 | post #4)
Secretive DirectBuy Can Save, But Is It For You?
That's very interesting, I hadn't thought about that aspect of things. What I would suspect is that if you search the Internet carefully you can find anything at a price similar to or cheaper then Direct Buy. The part about carting it home yourself home is just lame. Even BOB's offers home delivery, which you pay for. (May 13, 2008 | post #9)
South Windsor Council Approves Budget Plan
Joan Walsh isn't on the Town Council. She didn't vote to raise your taxes last night. None of the Democrats did. Think about that. (May 13, 2008 | post #10)
South Windsor Council Approves Budget Plan
The truth is the average resident is not very interested in Town politics...at least until he receives his annual tax bill. And for those of us with mortgages we don't even get to see the bills, as they go straight to the bank. And remember...the Town Manager comes up with the budget, not the council. We don't get to elect the Town Manager. All sorts of little pork items can be hidden in that sized budget. The TC only seems to pick away at little bits here and there. And when it's election day, Joe and Jane Citizen go to the polls and vote for the incumbents, because they are more comfortable with the candidates whose names look familiar, rather then those whose names are new to them. That is the power of incumbency. So if you want better people in the government, you need to get better people involved in the process. It's not the parties that are to blame for the current situation, it's the process. (May 13, 2008 | post #8)
South Windsor Council Approves Budget Plan
Tim, A lot of people -do- care. You choose to trash the Democrats... but they are not the ones who are in charge in town. The Republicans control both the TC and the BOE. The Democrats can speak at the meetings but that's about it. Rather then continually bash the Democratic party on this forum, Tim, why don't you attend the TC meetings and actually get up and speak? Don Gonzalves did just that last night, and he was very eloquent, as usual. As did several others. Yet aside from a handful of people, the TC chamber looked pretty empty. The majority party voted to raise your taxes last night, by passing the Town budget largely unchanged. Tim, I assume that you voted for these guys last November. Maybe not such a good idea now? If anybody here has a problem with their taxes going up and money being spent on Artificial Turf, or an empty post office building, you need to take it up with the Council. Nothing you post here is going to make a bit of difference to those in charge. (May 13, 2008 | post #6)
South Windsor Board Backs Tax Break Plan
If you can pack the next Town Council meeting, I'm talking here about filling the room so full that people are spilling out into the hallway, believe me, the "powers that be" will notice you all very, very quickly. They will be talking about the budget almost exclusively at the next meeting, so if you are unhappy with all the spending, that is the time to go. (May 7, 2008 | post #10)
South Windsor Tax Breaks May Grow
There are not many homes in SW that have a value under 200k. Is it the owner's fault that a home that they built for under $50,000 in the 1950's is now worth $300k or more? Their incomes are not going up as rapidly as the taxes are. That's why it's called "living on a fixed income". If you look at this bill the actual tax breaks are all not that large, and they're based on a State program to allow towns to give tax relief to Seniors and the disabled. (May 4, 2008 | post #6)

UConn Criticized For Cost Of President's Inauguration
After the UCONN 2000 debacle, nobody from the University has any moral authority to lecture the taxpayers about what is or is not an appropriate expenditure. And the Governor has just told the citizens that spending $10 million to beef up the criminal justice system is not an essential priority. Probably because that money was needed for partying at UCONN.... (May 4, 2008 | post #28)
UConn Criticized For Cost Of President's Inauguration
All non-profits are required to file a FORM 990 annually with the IRS. That is a public document, anyone can inspect it. Check your facts before you trash a charity that is actually helping to save people's lives! (May 4, 2008 | post #27)
Council Backs Plan For Artificial Turf
If you were there at the meeting it was pretty clear that the council "majority " was already set to vote Yes on this. Nothing said at that meeting could have changed their minds. Also Hale and Havens did not vote last night because they were not there. What you didn't see on TV was the size of the group in the audience who supported the fields. They appeared to be pretty well organized, and had the ear of the GOP members. It was a really good example of how a small but vocal group can get their way, simply because the opponents didn't turn out in force. If you're against runaway spending, you need to get to the council meetings, stand up, and be heard. Don't leave it to Don Gonsalves to do all the talking for you, because they just tune him out. The GOP are planning to pass the annual budget by May 12th. How many of you plan to be there? Also for all you "Third Party" folks, you can run for Town Council, BOE, and P&Z, in Nov. '09 if you can get on the ballot. But keep in mind that the appointments for most Boards and Commissions (Wetlands, ZBA, etc.) are made BY THE COUNCIL. So unless you win the majority in Nov. '09, you won't be getting appointed to any of those Boards. (Apr 29, 2008 | post #15)
Ellington Man Charged With Murder
After his arrest a year ago, Otto's attorney said that his client would seek a jury trial. According to the Corrections Dept. website, Otto remains in jail at the Walker Facility on $5 million bond. Capital cases could take a year or more to come to trial, assuming the defendant doesn't plead guilty. Both sets of attorneys need sufficient time to come up with their cases, locate witnesses, documents, and file motions. Also since the justice system is overloaded with serious cases, there is a delay in getting a trial date, picking juries, etc. (Apr 20, 2008 | post #62)
"The goal, Glover said, is not to tell children that smoking is bad, but show them." Ummmm, actually, at $26 a head, the goal is to make a whole lot of money. And I thought Sturbridge Village had a high admission price. Wow. (Dec 23, 2007 | post #1)
"Experimental " treatment is when you go to Mexico and somebody dressed up like a Doctor injects you with cat urine. An organ transplant in a major medical center where the medical team agrees that it would help the patient stay alive can not be considered experimental. It is what is known as the "standard of care". And to those who have posted saying the insurance company shouldn't have to pay for such an expensive procedure -- if you or someone close to you needed a quadruple bypass and was going to die without it -- that's not an experimental treatment. But it would end up costing a whole lot of money, probably in the same ballpark as this poor sick girl's liver transplant. Trust me, CIGNA isn't hurting for money. They built themselves a nice & fancy corporate HQ in Bloomfield. Everyone should check out http://www.healthc are4every1.org/ before you flame the other posters here. (Dec 22, 2007 | post #31)
