California court lets gay marriage ban stand

Generally speaking, liberals are people who favor reform and progress. Reactionaries are people who oppose reform and progress. Same sex marriage is generally supported by liberals. Conservatives and Islamic extremists have no tolerence for lifestyles unlike their own. Bible thumping Republicans and al Qaeda Islamic militants have a lot in common with their "my way or the highway" attitude. As a liberal, I much prefer "live and let live." This difference is extremely relevant to this discussion of gay marriage.  (Jun 5, 2009 | post #457)

Oyegi, don't bite Jim Aamodt. He is a good guy, although we disagree on just about everything. He is a straight shooter, and I respect that. And he uses his own name, which I view as a plus.  (Sep 27, 2008 | post #63)

Debate leaves some Santa Feans wanting more

My understanding is that there is not enough support for McCain in Santa Fe to justify opening an office. It was reported that McCain got a corner of the Republican Party offices and never opened his own. Was I mistaken about that? Maybe the New Mexican should have written a story about McCain having so little support in Santa Fe that his campaign could not justify opening its own office. The McCain supporters are surely working under the radar; they will continue to be invisible on election day.  (Sep 27, 2008 | post #52)

Pearce, Udall weighing bailout options

I got an idea for a different way to run the bailout. Instead of buying toxic debt, maybe the government should just buy new stock issues of the troubled companies. They could buy additional stock at current prices and gain ownership of the companies. The current investors would lose part of their ownership and part of the future profits, but at least there would be the chance of future profits. The companies would gain new needed capital and avoid collapse. The taxpayers wouldn't be buying worthless junk and would reap any profits from the investments.  (Sep 27, 2008 | post #5)

Candidates spar on Iraq, economy, judgment

By your definition, every political campaign is propaganda. Every word that either candidate uttered was intended to influence the opinion and/or voting behavior of large numbers of people. So if giving an accurate account of what the candidates said is a reflection of their propaganda, Roy's comments are propaganda. But, so is every word you have ever posted to the SFNM. Until you stop spreading right wing propaganda, stop criticizing others for doing the same from their perspective. Unless, of course, you have a direct pipeline to God and can only speak truth. In which case you are deluded as George W. Bush and you are not spreading propaganda, but just a raving looney.  (Sep 27, 2008 | post #28)

Candidates spar on Iraq, economy, judgment

The recent report on CNN that I saw showed that most people who watched the debate felt that Obama won, on every single issue, including Iraq. http://edition.cnn .com/2008/POLITICS /09/27/debate.poll /index.html  (Sep 27, 2008 | post #15)

Actually, they all get their information from the same source, the Federal Election Commission. If you want to see where the candidates are getting their contributions, it's all here: http://www.fec.gov /DisclosureSearch/ mapApp.do  (Sep 27, 2008 | post #14)

McCain bails on campaign over rescue deal

I think that Obama picked a running mate who is fully capable of fulfilling the duties of the President of the United States. I'm not at all worried about Joe Biden being able to pick up the reins of government. I don't think a person who has lived in a border state qualifies as having foreign relations experience. For example, Governor Richardson is the Governor of a border state, too. But that fact pales in comparison to the reality that he has also led diplomatic missions to North Korea, Iran, Columbia, and served as the US Ambassador to the United Nations, etc. Being a border state governor perhaps qualifies to be a border state governor, but not much else.  (Sep 27, 2008 | post #33)

C de Baca resigns over 'racial' remarks

One obvious way in which Blacks and Hispanics share the same struggle is the fact that they are the two groups at the bottom of the economic ladder, and have been so for a very long time. McCain bails on campaign over rescue deal

It's not his having battered as a POW. McCain has been disfigured by repeated bouts of melanoma skin cancer which have left deep surgical scars in his face. And that is a very good reason to worry about his running mate.  (Sep 26, 2008 | post #31)

That last sentence should read ... "if you want to maintain your broad based ignorance." Heaven forbid that "I" might want you to remain ignorant.  (Sep 26, 2008 | post #14)

Catron County man loses another round in ban on smoking

If you had any interest in learning something, which I doubt, you could inform yourself at this site. It is part of the United States government's National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute: http://www.cancer. gov/cancertopics/f actsheet/Tobacco/E TS Here you would find, among other effects, on the front page: "Secondhand smoke causes lung cancer in nonsmokers." On the other hand, I you want to maintain your broad based ignorance, don't bother to read it.  (Sep 26, 2008 | post #13)
